ruger Mark II jams

Member Posts: 11 ✭✭
I just traded a 22/45 for a regular mark II that appeared in similar condition. I have 3 ruger clips and one ramline 12 rounder. The pistol jams regularly with the ruger clips, all of them. The expended round is on top of the fresh one in the chamber.
I assume this is an ejector problem. Why the ramline doesn't jam, I don't know. Am I correct in my assumption? Any suggestions?

Same advice goes to others that may have problems ... give the company a chance to fix the problem before you get mad at them.
In 40+ years of shooting I've had mis-feeds and mis-fires in every 22 semi that I've owned and those pistols run from Colt Woodsmen to High Standards, to Brownings. Each and every pistol has "pet" ammo to perform at its' peak and ammo that it don't like and won't function worth a darn. And it isn't all about cost, but the less expensive ammo does give more problems. Same is true for mis-fires w/ revolvers, but you just "roll" through them.
If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!

I have a few theories as to why this gun jams so much:
1. I probably don't oil it enough. Since it is stainless I tend to go easy on the oil. Although when I cleaned it after this last time at the range I went heavy on the oil on the slide and inside parts. I haven't been back to the range yet, so I don't know if that helped.
2. Dirty mags, as a couple of you have already said. I have never cleaned my mags and I'm sure they probably don't feed as efficiently as they could.
3. Light recoil. I think this is a problem with all .22LR autoloaders.
4. Rapid fire. How can you keep from tapping away 3 rounds a second on this fun little gun? But I think sometimes I get too excited emptying my 10 rounds in 2.5 seconds, therefore the poor little guy gets jammed.
5. High volume shooting. Could it be that we just shoot more rounds of cheap .22LR through this gun? Therefore it may not jam all that much more, we are just shooting it more. Hmmmm...
6. Inconsistency in .22LR ammo. This is kind of linked to #5 above. I think we are more likely to find the "duds" in .22LR since most people shoot so much of it. Also, how reliable can this ammunition be when you can buy 5000 rounds for $120? There has to be some sacrifice in quality control. Do you think Winchester is going to spend the same amount of time and money testing the quality of a $2 box of .22 as they do for a $12 box of .357 Mag?
I think that the jamming is a combination of all of these (some more than less). I also agree with all of the suggestions that the rest of you have posted.
Happy Shooting!
If you allow the loaded rounds to fall away from the mouth of the mag when loading, they tend to stack unevenly when you release the spring tension on the mag.
I don't think it's an issue with the action of the gun, but the mag itself.
Does this make sense to anyone but me?
I like the way you think!!
I don't take my SlabSide out much, but when I do,I'm shootin' the "cheap stuff".It'll jam now and then, but hey,500 rounds for a few bucks?
BTW,I've never cleaned it or the mag.[^][^]

Hey Mateo, don't give up on this gun yet! Even though it is very finiky, it is the only gun I own that I can put all 10 rounds in the 10-ring at 15 yards, and at less than 5 seconds at that! (As long as it doesn't jam.)
Sure, I would never pull out the MKII to defend myself (I don't care how finiky it is, it's only a .22!!!), but it is accurate as heck, especially considering mine is a 4.75" barrel!
I love this gun. It is a kick in the pants, cheap to shoot, simple to maintain. Like gskyhawk said, you can dump 500 rounds through it and so what if it jams a dozen times, you just dumped 500 rounds for under $20! I bet he probably gets the same number of jams I do, given he never cleans his and I clean mine after every range trip. Maybe I should stop cleaning mine!
