I'm going to work up a load for my .308 and 6mm rem... what would be a good bullet to start with for the 6mm rem... i want something that expands very rapidily when hitting game but not too much where it dissinigrates through the air or as soon as it hits the target...the same for the .308...can you use 7.62 by 39 in a .308 and is a .308 still a .30 caliber bullet? the 6mm is just a .243 bullet isn't it?

The pros can correct me here, but a 7.62 x 39 is NOT the same as .308
I believe the 7.62x39 is .311. .308 is 7.62x 51 and uses a .308 bullet. The russian round is also a rimmed case, completely different profile. The .308 is semirimmed and essentially a shorter version of the .30-06. Vastly different pressures and velocity.

Nothing essential about it, it is a shorter 30-06!Same rim, and not that much difference in pressures and velocity.I favor the '06 but the .308 has won more benchrests-It has a greater post war popularity. why??? we don't lighter-shorter!

Allechalley is right on as concerns the bullet diameter of the 7.62x39. They run closer to 310 than 311 but this should not be considered interchangeable with 308 bullets. Two thousandths is a bit too much and too tight to safely shoot from your 308 bore. The likely result, while not really unsafe would be spiking pressures and brass that shows a fair bit of stress! Also might see undue copper fouling after relatively few shots.

as BigGameHunter42 said Balistic tips are great! In my .308 win. the 165 gr'ers are hard to beat.
