I just came into a Glock 31C in .357. I have never owned or fired a .357. What are your opinions about this round? Recoil, choice of rounds, etc.....I am trying to deceide whether to keep it or sell/trade it for something else. Any help I can get would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
Jerry

Q: Why did you shoot him 16 times?
A: I didn't see the need to reload!
Hard Fun!

I like several cartridges better than the .357 SIG round, but that's just personal preference. I personally do not recommend a compensated gun for defense however. But, if it's more for target then it's a fun round to shoot, but would be more on the expensive side as is my favorite caliber - the 10mm.

This pic should put the various Glock cartridges into perspective:

The 357sig is a 9mm mag or a 9mm +P+. Still a 9mm. I agree with Bambihunter the 10mm is my favorite calibur also. The diagram Bambihunter has tells it all. My 2 cents [8D]

If you like Glocks and want to get something interesting look at the new GAC (Glock Automatic Cartridge?) 45. By the numbers it seems to outperform the 45 ACP in a slightly smaller package and of course only Glock chambers it currently. As to price and availability of the new round?...that may be another story

Uh, isn't it known as the .45 GAP (Glock automatic pistol), offered in the G37?

Jerrygski, one thing I forgot to mention previously - the 10mm auto has more energy and a higher velocity at 100 yards than the .45 has at the muzzle. The .357 SIG will show great down-range power and velocity, but at defense ranges the margins will be very close to the .45's.

Bambihunter...more velocity and energy at 100 yards than a 45 at the muzzle?? Do you have any stats to back that up? I have been thinking of getting a witness 10mm, is there much velocity loss out of the shorter barrel of the witness compact?
    Thanks

Though I have not messed around with my Glock 31C that much because I am hardly ever at home I really enjoy shooting the pistol. The only problem that I have is finding ammo for it, where I live only one store sells them and they go for $20.00 a box which is kind of high so I just stick to mail ordering them. I also like the fact that I can shoot 9mm, and .40 out if it with only a barrel change, shooting 9mm will require you to use Glock 17 magazines though.

Admittedly ignorant, I see the Sig .357 as a specialized self-defense round.
    Nothing more.

"more velocity at 100 yards than the 45 at muzzle "

Is it just me, or are other people wondering WHO shoots there pistol at 100 yards????? I know that is about 4 times the distance that I can hit anyhting with a pistol. Maybe it is just me...

Muss, I certainly can't hit effectly out that far, but there are those who can and do. There was a guy on American Shooter (TV Show) that was using a stub-nosed revolver and was hitting 8" plates every shot at 100 yards AND 200 yards...

My analogy about the 10mm having more at 100 yards than the .45 acp has at the muzzle is more for visualization of the differences in the round. Chris8161, I will look that info up and post it here. I just got up for a bathroom break and am going back to bed now. I must be obsessive - I have to check GB on bathroom breaks. [:I]

    Muss:
We used to shoot jack rabbits at 100+ yards with 1911A1, 6" revolvers and other handguns. Didn't miss often either once you got the hang of things. It's all personal preference as far as I'm concerned. Personally for self defense or other serious business, either a 10mm or a 357 in a Python.

Bambi, I thought you were in Texas, somewhere; talk to some Rangers or Hiway Patrol there, and let them tell you about its' Death Ray status! The 357Sig is excellent at 100yds. and any other ranges you'd consider taking aimed shots at from a pistol; I used to shoot silhouette with my 2340 in 40S&W till I swapped barrels for the 357, never shot a 40, but I did get a 34 once!
One Border Patrol (Migra) officer I talk to often in El Paso stated that his whole shift has swapped the crap issue guns (Grocks) for Sigs in 357 when they go cuttin' sign for smugglers/terrorists slightly North of Mexico. He told me once a slug went through a car door, across the driver's belly (and through him), and exited the other side of the car's window. That's almost impossible with a slow, heavy .45.
They load 'em with Ranger FMJ's or Gold Dots.

If you know it all; you must have been listening.<br>WEAR EAR PROTECTION!
