S&W 629-2/629-2E ?????

I have a Smith & Wesson Model 629 which claims to be a Model 629-2 with a BDS serial number (BDS2138). The BDS serial number is supposed to mean it was manufactured April/May 1989. The 629-2 was supposed to have been manufactured in 1988. The Model 629-2E was supposed to have been manufactured in 1989.

Do I have a Model 629-2 with a serial number "out of range", or do I have a Model 629-2E which didn't get the "E" stamped into the yoke, or is it another answer which I'm not smart enough to figure out?

hi..don't claim to be expert at anything.......... . but from the looks of the numbers i'd have to say you have a 629-2

James, where are you getting your info.? "The Standard Catalog of S&W Second Edition" makes no note of a 629-2E just the 629-2 and says the BDS series started in 1989? Hope this helps?

ATF...... Yes it does.... There is a 629-2E listed on page 199 as one of the engineering changes to the 629 done in 1989.

James... I would guess that you have a 629-2 made in april 89 as the serial number suggests, but before the start of the 629-2E series also in 1989 but likely after april.

ATF........... I have never seen a 629-2E either but since they went to the 629-3 that same year, I would think they did not make many guns stamped 629-2E.

Since I don't shoot it very much and I'm not planning to sell it anyway, I guess It doesn't matter much which it is, but I'd a little rather have the 629-2E. The yoke and frame on the 2E and later is supposed to be a little stronger than the -2. I'm still a little curious about the model number and the serial number not matching up though. Maybe if I ever get over this lazy spell I'll ask S&W what the deal is. Then again maybe not. I still have a Model 586 no dash that I haven't sent in for the recall yet. I bought a Model 15 once that the box and paperwork claimed was a Model 10. That didn't bother me because I paid for a Model 10, but I know S&W ain't always careful with their paperwork.

    Thanks for all the replies.
