M60 cleaning procedure/ gas piston

In preserving my baby/ retirement fund, the Technical Manual only says "clean gas cylinder only if necessary" and "Check to see if gas piston moves freely by tilting barrel assy. up and down". My question is if I an being to * by trying ti get the last bit of residue our of the inside of the piston itself. I'm using the Outers foam, and it's getting a little $$$. I'm thinking , if the holes are clean & dry, justlube the inside of the piston and reassemble per the TM.Gas cylinders and bores cleaned up real well BTW.

Anyone with comments/suggestions?

The M-60 piston gets crudded up really fast with blank ammo. As long as you are not shooting blanks or corrosive primed ammo, and the piston still makes the "clunk" when you tip the gun, life is good. FWIW- have run into a LOT of single shot M-60's- because when someone pulled the piston to clean it, they replaced it in the cylinder backwards. Pay attention to which part should face the operating rod. Careful with lube on the gas piston- it burns into more carbon.

One of the big things on M60's and the gas system is that on full auto guns need to have the ends wired so they dont turn loose on firing. I dont clean mine very often, I dont see much point, unless it is needed. If you are that worried about build up buy a spare piston, they are about $30 on here.

BTW- and it HAS been a while- check the manual. I THINK it says the piston is generally self cleaning EXCEPT when shooting blank ammo. OTOH, have not fired a 60 since I retired in 89, and can't remember what I had for breakfast yesterday- so check the manual.
