My father put a 8mm Mauser onto one of those synthetic stocks. It has the rail and he wants a cheap but decent scope. Give me some suggestions, it would be a surprise if I got him something nice.

Well, I think I decided to buy an 8mm Mauser when I get my first paycheck in about a month....I looked at one, I believe a model 98, for 130 bucks...is that a decent price? Also found a site online that offers loads that outperform Federals standard 30.06 loads, but they were 33 bucks a box, plus another 12 dollars if under 5 boxes are ordered, and a 30 dollar handling charge...does anyone know any sites where I can find good hunting loads for less than that? Federals factory loads are the only legal hunting load I saw in store, and their ballistics are ok, but not even nearly that good. Thanks again!

I have had this rifle for twenty years it was purchased by my father in 1957 from the Military. They were issued with a option to buy originally for protection from Polar Bears. it was modified in 1975 to accommodate a 3X9 Bushnell trophy scope for Dear Hunting. it has the stepped barrel and the sliding sight arm was remove for the scope fitment The only Number I can see easily is 652 stamped on the Barrel and trigger housing. I was thinking of selling as I have not hunted in years and I have several older Guns for keeps sakes. any Ideas on what It might be worth. It is in Great shape and has not been fired for over 10 years now.

We need more info. Photos are needed. Surely there are more markings. Look near the muzzle, on the side and bottom of the barrel.

first off, welcome aboard. like a.g. said we need lots more info to give a accurate answer. you could have a $100 DEER rifle or something more. if it is an 8mm Mauser it didn't come from the U.S. military.

No, it was definitely purchased from The Air force in 1957 by my Dad. It is a 8mm Mauser he was stationed on a giant iceberg that had run aground in the Arctic ocean between Russia and Alaska "it was a research post ". wink wink he was stationed there from 1956 to 1957 I have pictures and will post them tonight after I get off work. I live in Alaska so My time zone is 4 hours behind eastern standard time.
Thanks for the reply. there are a couple of other numbers on the barrel but they are partially obscured by the stock. I sure would hate to remove the stock, it has never been apart that I know of and I have had it since 1976. There is also a small stamp embedded on the top left side of the barrel like a small imperial engraving. it is a 7.92 cal 8 MM with a stepped barrel, bolt action safety on the bolt action lever. I actually used it back in my twenties for Dear hunting. Can put a round in a quarter drawing at 100 yards no problem but then again I received an expert Marksman ribbon in the Military.
Anyways thanks for the welcome to the Board and again for the help, I will get some pictures on here tonight and that would be around midnight eastern standard time. Among others I also have a model 1886 33. Winchester Special lever action side loading with the octagon Barrel , (that one is not even a consideration for sale).

To identify the German Mausers properly, "ALL" markings should be shown with quality close up photos. If it's not possible to get the find detail of the markings in your photos. Give us a descripction of the markings, to the best of your ability.

Here are instructions for adding photos, others have used them with success.

First thing you need is a site to host your picture. What I mean by that is that you will need to upload your pictures to a web site that will host(display) them for you. You should not use your hard drive to host pictures for safety sake. Use www.photobucket.com to host your pictures.

After you have uploaded your pictures to the site that will host them for you(per their directions), the next thing you will want to do is go to the picture hosting site and view the picture. While you are viewing the picture, right click on it and you'll see another window that should pop up, now click on "properties" and copy the picture URL. If you know how to "copy & paste" this will be a piece of cake.

Now that you have the picture URL and your ready to post your picture. Do the following, use the following code except take out the "*" asterisk. The "*" asterisk is used here only so you can see the code. In other words if I posted the code without the "*" asterisk you will see a picture instead of the code. Anyways use this code to post your picture..
    [*img]the picture URL goes here[*/img]

cal 7.92 [p][r]and the same stamp from the trigger guard.

so does anyone recognize that manfacturer stamp? it appears on the barrel, the trigger gaurd shown here and on the side just before the cal.7.92 [p][r]
A gun nut here looked at it thought it was the three crown mark from the Swiss Manufacturer of 8mm's . I do mean gun nut in the nicest way though, he just spent twelve grand on a side by side elephant gun and will never get to africa to hunt them, i am sure. Probably go Moose hunting with it, we got some big moose up here. LOL
I however do not think that is right because I do not think the Dates jive.
about the only fact I know is it was bought in 1957 so it is deffinatley pre that date perhps 652 is the Manufacture date after all.

I would suspect that the most significant piece of identification is under the front scope base. Removal of the scope and front base for inspection purposes would be of no consequence because whoever bought it would need to sight the rifle in for themselves anyway. Since the rifle is semi-sporterized, it has no collector value to speak of, so unless it is a very desirable M-98 varation that someone would want to build into a full blown custom rifle, the manufacturer is more a matter of curiosity and interest to you because of it's history in your life. Rifles similar to your's sell around here for $150.-200.

I am sure your right I thought about removing the Scope mount but since I really had not decided for sure to sell it and it shoots so good I was hoping some one would be able to tell by the markings. It could also be one of the Million or so, of 8mm captured by the Russians in WW2 and reworked, being that it came from up here so close to Russia.
For a couple of hundred it will stay buried in the closet with the other guns till when ever.
If any one can guess the model or has one like it, knows these Markings and can estimate the date by the Markings, let me know.
    Thanks
