Due to having got some coin for Christmas, I have been lookin at scopes for my Rem. 700 25-06. Probably will end up with a Leupold because I know they're good, but would like you experts to rate some other brands and models that might be fine.

Compared to a Leupold VXII or VXIII how do these stack up?

Bushnell Elite
Bushnell Banner
Simmons Master Pro Hunter
Simmons Gold Metal
Nikon Pro Staff
Nikon Buckmaster
Burris Fullfield II
Zeiss Conquest
Weaver Classic

Thanks for everyone's input

Buy a Swift, they have excellent optics and the very best warranty available. If it ever fails, you simply take it back to the dealer, hand it to him, and he hands you a brand new scope[:D]. All of my rifles now wear Swifts.

    Good luck

IMO, they would rate like this:

    -Zeiss
-Burris Sig. or Fullfield (best scopes for the money out there)
-Leupold VX I,II, or III (good scopes but don't compare to Burris IMO)
-Nikon Buck or Bushnell Elite 4200
-Nikon Prostaff or Bushnell Elite 3200
-Bushnell Banner (excellent for the money)
-Simmons anything (wouldn't personally buy one as everyone I come across are junk)

Have no experience with the Weavers.

Edit: The Swifts I have looked through were nice and bright/clear, but since I haven't personally used them, I can't tell you how they handle high recoil, which is why I didn't list them with the Burris/Leupolds.

My bushnells work fine. I think for the cheap ones go they are probably the best. I dont see the point in spending 600 bucks on a scope. If you cant shoot they arent going to help you

part of the reason people can't shoot as well is because their scopes are JUNK. You get what you pay for in optics. Ever seen a bushnell at a benchrest match or on a sniper rifle?? Not that they aren't good CHEAP scopes,..but when I mount one, it is on a CHEAP rifle or one that will never shoot past 150-200yds.

Burris signature series.[8D] The Zeiss conquest is not that great a scope,...I have taken them outside the gunstore many times and felt that the weaver grand slam beat them at 1/2 the price. The Burris is IMHO the best deal going,..and a bit better than the leupy vx-iii series. I beleive the zeiss is a good scope,..but not worth their price tag which obviously is depending on their european reputation and not on the quality of the AMERICAN conquest series.

for the average hunter you are not going to be shooting more than 200 yards. yes for the guy who is going for something 400+ or a sniper whos life depends on it, then I think an expensive scope would be in line. But 98% of the people out there are white tail hunters who will never shoot at anything past 200yds

I understand what you're saying and do agree that the Bushnell Banner series scopes are a good scope for the money. But like JustC is saying, you do get what you pay for. You never fully realize this until you have moved up a set in optics. I replace a lot of scopes each year for folks that when we're out shighting in can't hit a coke can at 25yds. (and no it isn't the shooter, it's the junk scope). Had a guy buy a brand new Rem. 700 30-06 and some cheap $75 20X scope, he came out to shoot with me and a buddy and was just-a-talkin' up his new scope, UNTIL he realized he couldn't turn it past 12X or it was unclear and that while me and my buddy were steady pickin off pumpkins at 300yds. he never got within 50yds of them and never within 50yds. of his last shot. He was Army infantry, doubt it was him.

Lastly, I have a Bushnell Banner, and really like it for what it is and for what I use it for. But you can take both my rifles in the deerstand, one with the Bushnell and one with the Burris, but at 5:45-6am here you can only see through one of them. The burris gives me an extra 15-30mins. hunting time, which allowed me to take a couple deer this year that came out right at dark. Couldn't have seen them through the Bushnell. You get what you pay for.

dear nards. i don't know what you hunt or where you hunt it but right out of the chute having an outfit that shoots two or three inches one way or the other isn't a confidence builder. there are enough variables in the field that make the difference between a good hit, a gut shot, or a missed shot. i try to eliminate the ones i can. the variables i can't control such as after you've pulled a ridge faster than a man had ought to move and your panting harder than a blind friend at a wennie roast, add two quarts too much of adrenaline flowing through your veins and nothing to rest on for the shot just might make you shoot two or three inches one way or the other. i don't think i would compound it with poor quality equipment. by the way this is not a senario, happened once to me.
