Dovetail sight removal/installation

I want to replace the sights on an old Stevens .22 rifle w/3/8" dovetail slots. Is this a job I can do at home w/basic tools? Looks like it should be fairly simple. Any advice appreciated.

I've just finished blueing a Rem 511 that has dovetailed front sights. I used an old door hinge pin that I ground down somewhat and then ground a profile in it to match the profile of the sight. It tapped out fairly easily and once the gun and various parts were blued I used that pin to tap ir back in. No marring at all. Worked for me. Dave

Don't use a punch made out of steel. If you slip it will put a ugly gouge in the metal. There are punches made out of brass specifically for this type of job. At most if a brass punch slips it will only leave a brass colored smear mark that is easily removed, with out marring the metal around the dovetail.

I have always used brass or nylon punches. However I do know a couple of "old guys" that know their stuff and they use deer antler. I have not used it but it works well on old Winchesters.

Nylon or brass drift is fine - punch out the sight left to right.

Yes , good advice , and do remember "GO RIGHT" (always go left to right on sites and pins )...
    Good Luck !!!

I cannot coment on the pins but High Standard pistol sights are manufactured with the base taperes and should be removed from right to left. So the left to right is not a universal rule.
