About a year ago I posted that my father had an M1 mfg'd by Singer. The concensus was, I doubt it, I said I'd check it out and one whole year later I got around to it.[:I]

I have no idea where he got Singer from, and neither does he. It's made by Inland. Anyways I'd like to know what you/y'all think the value of this carbine is. A search on GB pulls up a pretty wide range and I'm just not all that familiar with these to know their differences. What I do know is that it was bought at least 35yrs ago from the DMC or similar place. It looks to have never been used (unissued surplus??). He says he put a few boxes of bullets through it since he bought it. It's been put up ever since.

Now in keeping with my, it took a year to even take a look at this thing, I snapped a few pics of it while I was at his house and completely forgot to write down any details.[B)] So all I have to go on is what can be seen in the somewhat crummy pics.

It says Inland, General Motors and I think 8-44 on the barrel, as well as Inland Div.? and the serial number of 5061744 on the back of the receiver. It doesn't have an import mark. The parkerizing is mint as is the bore.

Any help on this one?[8D]

So as to not waste anymore bandwidth, here are the rest of the pics I took, some pretty crummy though.

Yeah, I forgot to add that he said he sprayed that stuff on it when he got it. Should I use stripper and remove it and rub with Linseed oil or leave as is?

It's a nice looking US arsenal rebuild, with a typical mixture of parts. It may have SI (Saginaw/Inland) stamped on the left side of the receiver, which could be where your father got the idea that Singer had something to do with it.

The stock not only has finish sprayed on it, but was previously sanded. That was common during rebuild. It came off an IBM carbine. If it were mine, I'd strip the finish (Formby's furniture stripper rubbed with 0000 steel wool), then refinish (3 coats Formby's tung oil thinned with mineral spirits applied with a rag, 0000 steel wool between coats). But, if you don't have hollow ground screwdrivers & know how to safely remove all metal from the stock, I'd leave it alone.

If you want to figure out what all the parts are, you can buy a copy of US M1 Carbines Wartime Production by Craig Riesch.

With better photos, I'd expect it to sell in the $900-$1,000 range on GB, assuming there's no rust below the wood line.

    Thanks Neal[8D]

I'll see if he wants to do anything with the stock. He said he didn't think twice about spraying it back then, thought it looked nice. And of course he sure wasn't thinking about hurting the value on this gun he had just paid $20 for.[;)][:D]

Maybe he got Singer confused with the .45 pistols they made for the military.

It looks like the metal is in good shape. The stock looks like a low gloss Varathane finish. Its a GI stock but the new finish detracts from its value.

I have redone some of my carbine stocks. After removing the finish I applied some walnut stain, then 24+ hrs later, boiled linseed oil. I have found that it makes for a very nice finish, close to the original.

Where's the barrel band with bayonet lug?

The early M1 carbines did not have bayonet lugs on the barrel band as the bayonet was considered unnecessary for its intended use; they were originally intended to replace the .45 pistol being carried by tank crews, artillery types, etc.
