Ruger 10 - 22 misfire

My son purchased a new Ruger 10/22 Delux and went target shooting with friends last Friday (I was at work and couldn't join in). He was shooting some older Federal rounds and experienced the following:

A cartridge discharged prior to being fed into the chamber. The bullet did not exit (was intact) and the casing split along one side and filleted out...flat. There was no muzzle blast...all of the sound came out at the receiver.

There is no aparent physical damage to the firearm and when he switched to Remmington cartridges, there were no problems for the rest of the day (about 50 rounds shot).

So, experts, do you think this was a problem with the brand of cartridge not fitting the firearm? Have you had any similar problems? Unless convinced otherwise, I'll chalk this one up to an ammo brand that the rifle doesn't like and avoid Federals.

Thanks in advance.

either bad round or on a new gun could have been a burr or dried grease on firing pin and it did not retract but tip was sticking out the breach and it fired the round as it was starting to go in the chamber.

Sounds like the round stovepiped (got caught between the bolt and the face of the chamber) and the bolt squashed it, and made it go off prematurely. Unsure what the bit about the bullet not exiting; exiting the barrel? the casing? the chamber?
Could have been a 22Short? Possibly a misfeed during rapid fire?
Take some of the "old Federals" and go with him to recreate the problem, I think it may have happened when he tried to Dillinger a pop can.

How old were those federals? How were they stored? I would not discount the whole brand do to a single round, but I would inspect the remainder of the cartridges to look for any form of corrosion or metal distress. I must say that I have fired tens of thousands of rounds out of several 10/22's in the past 30+ years and I have never had a problem as described.

It sounds like the same thing that happens sometimes to me with my 10/22. It will not fully eject the used shell and it will jam in the action. Strangely I also use Federals so it could be the ammo.

I had the same thing happen to me with a project 10/22. It was like the round would fire before being fully chambered. What I ended up doing was replacing the entire trigger assy. with a brand new one that someone had dropped out of theirs to upgrade.

Bought the new trigger assy. from nunn a coupla years ago for around 30-35 bucks.

Now, since this is a new gun, get ahold of Ruger.

My 10/22 does the same thing with cheap ammo.It needs to be kept clean. This is why I don't shot it any more and use my marlin model
60 because it will eat anything I feed it! My ruger is top of line
target model and when two kids get done college I see a cooper for
Dad after 8 years of tution payments.Sorry for being all over the place here but 10/22 isn't high on my list.

    Strange.

I feed the cheapest crap possible out of my 10/22, which happens to be Federal 9 times out of 10.

I've never experienced this at all.

New gun, round goes off out of battery, I think I'd send it back to ruger. With the case if you still have it.

I just got around to getting a brandy new 10-22, my first at that, all dirty. Made a point to tear it down, clean & lube and of course put back together and to the range with some different ammo. Only the Federal 550 party pack gave problems as you describe. I've run probably 6000+ rounds of it through my MKII pistols and never a problem. Found this 10/22 cycled fine with Remington and Winchester 500/550 packs with the 40 grain Winchester being the most accurate with consistant 5 round dime sized groups at 50 yards. Nothing like a day off spent at the range! I'll try the Fed's again after another couple of 1000 rounds.
Have your son tear it down and do a clean and lube. Next trip out, bring some variety, verify what works best and stock up!

i own a 10/22 and federals do seem to get stovepipe jams and misfires more often, remmington golden bullets and thunderbolts have always worked very well, im pretty sure its the ammo not the gun
