I've seen compasses implanted in several different model Winchesters over the years and to the best of my knowledge they were never installed at the factory. They were more than likely Dealer or Customer modifications.

Addition: There are several very knowledgeable Winchester collectors on the forum. They may have personal information or documentation that will shed more light on the subject.

I have never heard of a factory installed compass in a Winchester. Marble made a neat small compass for this purpose that a lot of guys bought and installed in the stock themselves. I've seen them on the top of the comb, in the side of the stock, and in the bottom of the stock. But no to the best of my knowledge Winchester never installed one in a stock.
