22 rimfire question

I've been benchrest target shooting with mr H & R 12 and notice after 10 or so shots the barrel becomes so clogged with powder residue that I cannot see any light when I look through the barrel. I've tried several brands of ammo. Is this normal for a 22. I've been running a patch down every 10 rounds. Is accuracy affected by leaving the residue or should I patch the barrel after every group. I've been told that 22 rimfire barrels should not be cleaned. Any advice would be appreciated

Can anyone suggest a particular rifle that handles the hyper velocity 22 rimfires well? I have 5 22's, a weatherby, 2 browning takedowns, a winchester 75 heavy barrel target, and a sears auto. I've tried about all the high velocity ammo on all the guns at 100 yds benchrest and the best I can get is about a 5" 5 shot grouping. The wourst by far is winchester super max which is lucky to group 12". I like to hunt woodchucks with a 22

Can only tell you what you have already discovered- fastest ain't always the best. When reloading for centerfire rifles, the "accuracy load" is rarely the hottest. It it t'were not so, match ammo would all be hypervelocity. IF you have a bolt action .22, try the Aguila SSS load (sub sonic sniper) 60 grain bullet, 22 short case, fat slow, and effective. Your mileage may vary.

If the bullet slows to the trans-sonic level, the turbulence around the bullet will really open up your groups. Starting supersonic and staying supersonic, OR starting at sub-sonic levels will do a lot for your group sizes.
There is a reason that 22RF target ammo has the MV that it does (so that it's sub-sonic at the muzzle).

I've head good things about the accuracy of the Marlin and Savage 22 magnums... sorta counts I guess since it is 22, rimfire, and definately high velocity (I'm saving my nickles for a savage 93 fvss in 22mag - stainless heavy barrel)

I have had similar experiences as you. For hunting, I have chosen to shoot Stinger ammo out of a Savage/Anshutz, a Remington 541-S, and a Remington 580 single shot. I can get around 2 inch groups at 50 yards with any of the three. I finally decided to buy a .17 Hornady Magnum Rimfire for shots out to 150 yards. I got a Marlin with a bull barrel and mounted a Leupold 3-9x 50 scope with adjustable objective. It is a great shooter and in my opinion it is the only way to get both accuracy and power in a rimfire rifle. If I am target shooting with a .22 at 100 yards I use only target ammo. Otherwise it's not worth the bother.

I'm reinforcing what IWANNA - wrote. I've had a Savage 93 FVS for about 6 years. First time to the range, out of the box, iron sights, shooting at a 2" square bright yellow sticky note, stuck on the target backer at 100 yards, I had 7 and 1/2 hits out of ten shots 9. The 1/2 hit was a nick on one edge. I don't know how close the other 2 shots were, but from the evidence I assume not too far off the 2" square. I was shooting CCI maxi mag hollow points. Since then I've put a 3-9x32mm scope on it and I can vouch for its effectiveness on 25lb Autumn ground hogs out to about 150yards, expecially with the CCI TNT rounds, also the CCI Quickshock work well on the Spring skinny hogs.
With regard to the high end bolt actions you cite above, you should be able to do better than that even with the hyper velocity rounds. My old Mossberg 1930's M-42B groups the Aguila Super Maximums and CCI Stingers into two inch and slightly less groups at 100 yards from a bench rest, with an adjustable side mount peep sight, no scope.

I have 2 Marlin B60 semi auto's, both hadle cci stingers very well, one of the B60's prefers the stinger above all other ammo and groups it into a bit over an inch at 100 yds, the other one shoots them into 2.5 inches- mini mags work well for me too. My best rimfire is a heavy barreled Sav 93 in 17HMR, shoots cci TNT into 1/2inch and Hornady vmax strings 3 inches horazontal go figure?

As stated above, .22 LR 's do not do well when the bullet transfers back to sub-sonic flight, so there are several thing to prevent that from happening:
    1) Keep your shots at shorter ranges to insure that the bullet stays super-sonic till it hits the target.
    2) Use only sub-sonic ammo, try a little bit of everything on the market, .22's are very ammo sensitive. When you find the load you gun likes best you need to buy all of that lot number that you can find. Several of my .22's love Wolf Match Extra, it is very reasonably priced for match ammo also.
    3) Use a cartridge that will stay super-sonic out past 100 yards, such as the .17 HMR or .22 WMR.
