Any ideas as to what a crate (500rds) of unopened (still stapled close) Alcan 12 Gauge Shotgun shells would be worth?

Keep in mind, that it's old stuff. I believe that S & W bought out Alcan in the 70's, and subsequently folded them up shortly after. If their original Alcan's dating back to the 70's or even earlier, it's conceivable that their paper hulls.

No one collects full cases of shotshells, so the boxes inside will be the determining factor. While this is too far outside my specialty to give even an educated guess, without any idea of the age / packaging scheme and box condition, it would be impossible to value them. They could be paper as Rufe indicated and they could be plastic produced as Alcan or produced with the Alcan brand by S&W. However, they are not fantastically valuable under any circumstances. If you are buying, don't go crazy because there is a very limited market for post-WW2 shotgun shells except for the more scarce items. If selling, don't quit your day job. As a very WAG, between $20 and $35 / box IF the boxes are pristine (not scuffed or dented - not merely protected by the large carton).

Thanks for the input, guys. An aquaintence through work has a crate (no shotgun though) and I've been trying to get him to release a few boxes to me (With a fair offer, of course) Not sure if they are paper or plastic, but it sounds like either way, no one will miss them if I pick up a couple boxes for hunting.

Last fall I shot up two boxes of Alcan without a hitch. As to value, I understand that if the boxes do NOT have the keep away from children warning, they are collectable. I also had some other paper shells that looked perfect but some were duds....
