As a cost saving measure Winchester cheapened the design of their rifles and shotguns in 1964. The model 70 bolt was changed from a controlled feed to a push feed design. The model 94 had some parts changed from milled to stamped and pins changed from solid to rolled sheet metal. There are probably going to be more detailed responses to the changes but these are basically the type changes made.

Is there a good web site to find out about pre '64 win.s? (besides this one). Every since my buddy bought one with a broken stock for $100 in 1972 I have wanted one. Slickest action I have ever touched. I watch them here on GB and see a few at the gun shows. What do you watch for when looking for one?

If you use the "Search" function and use the term "pre-64", you will find lots of information on this forum. Here is just one of the many discussions covering this topic - http://forums.gunbroker.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=198065

    Mike992,

BertH, covered more the lever actions that Winchester is famous for. And a fine, fine, Winchester man he is.[:D][8D]

The biggest change to the Winchester bolt action line(Model 70) was that they went away from the Mauser style claw extractor. Which, is quite famous for being able to feed and extract anything. They went instead to the push feed type bolt which won't grab the cartridge as it is being loaded into the chamber. Nor will it extract as reliably. Winchester did come up with a better extraction system still than Remington in their bolt action. As noted the fit and finish had changed considerably as well. Actions did not cycle as smoothly and the wood didn't meet the metal like it used to. It took a number of years before Winchester got back on track from those changes.

ALIENS!!!! An alien flying saucer crash-landed onto the roof of the Winchester factory in 1964...took over the operations! Winchester products have been using salvaged parts from the UFO ever since!!!
