1903 Springfields are derivatives of Mauser actions so will a commercial mauser barrel fit a 1903A3 action I have a customised 1903A3 and was considering rebarrelling and chambering in .35 whelen since the current military barrel is totally shot out. any input would be appreciated

Unlikely! Springfields are threaded 10 Square Threads Per Inch. With a 1.040 O.D. Mausers are 12 "V" Threads Per Inch, with a 1.100 O.D.

Get hold of a copy of "Bolt Action Rifles" by de Haas. He has the above data for various rifles in his reference section.

    Rifleman188,

The Springfield M1903 barrels and variants are 10 square threads x 1.040" diameter with a coned breech and extractor groove while the Mauser M98 barrels are 12 TPI x 1.100" 'V' threads and a flat breech.

    Best.

not trying to stur the pot but...parker hale made up some m-98 actions that were threaded for springfield barrels (cheap surplus at the time)

If you just want to swap barrels, it won't fit, but you can adapt a '98 barrel to fit into an 03 action with some minimum work. It requires a little knowledge. You'll have to cut in the extractor slot. After the war many 98 bbls were adapted to 03's because most were really cheap. You could pick up a 98 from almost anyone that came back and they were extremely plentiful......back then. It may be a little costly in the long run if you have someone do it for you, but then you have a mauser bore to contend with

You'd have to cut off 5/8" of the comml Mauser barrel and thread for the Springfield square thread. It then would need the chamber sunk deeper and an extractor cut made. No big deal if you have a lathe.
The barrel contour would move back and create a gap if you had a stock set up for that barrel contour.
