Selling My Hangun...Can I?

I live in TN and was wondering how to go about selling my P345? I was offered money at a Gun SHow and said I wasn't selling a little while ago. Now I may want to sell it and get something else...

How do I legally sell a handgun in my state? Do I need to notify the Dept. of Safety or the Police?

Check with your local and state requirements about transfering a firearm to another person!

TN law allows you to sell guns. It's a good idea to get a receipt with buyers name, address, gun S/N, etc.

Getting real info about the guy you are selling to is a good thing. Look at his driver's license and make sure he is who he says he is.
Illegal aliens arenot allowed to own firearms in America. Write down the license number. You don't want to be found irresponsible if the guy you sell your gun to goes home and shoots his family with it! Ask him some questions, use common sense.

If you're uneasy about selling to someone you don't know, sell it on Gunbroker.com and then it will be transfered through an FFL, or sell it on consignment at a local gun shop.

There are lots of decent people who like to buy face-to-face, but, ask those questions. Good guys won't mind answering.

No requirements at all in TN, except you can't knowingly sell to a felon or illegal alien. There's no requirement for you to have proof of anything, but still a good plan to have proof of who you sold it to.

I live in TN, and my friends and I frequently sell guns to each other with no paperwork at all.

You may sell to a TENNESSEE resident, or to an FFL in any state. And, the best way to tell that an unlicensed buyer is a TN resident is to see his TN drivers license. Better yet, just to protect yourself, write down the information on the license or photocopy it.

I assume there is an age requirement as well, and you want to be sure the buyer is of legal age. Again the best way is to get info from drivers license. Name, address, listed age etc. Standard procedure.

I know it is a hassle, but go to a FFL dealer and have them do a transfer for you. It is legal to sell it to another TN resident, but to be on the safe side and assume ZERO responsibility, that is your best bet.

If you are around the Kingsport, Bristol or Johnson City areas, I
can run it on GB and do the transfer for you...all for a reasonable fee.

I'm not from Tn. but correct me if i'm wrong. The BATFE is FEDERAL AGENCY and requires a NCIC check on all handgun tranfers other than a hand down from a family menber. So the only legal way for a Handgun sale is thru a FFL. It's the only safe way to protect your self also.If the gun is stolen or used in a crime etc.or the new owners kid get injured it's gonna trace back to you. Jim
