Soaking it in a can of solvent for a week or so is good. Freezing
and thawing can help. I'm sure you know, but be certain it isn't loaded.

CVA - are you sure the breech plug is removable? Had a CVA that came in last fall that customer had ruined the breech plug on trying to get it out. Ended up emailing CVA about a new barrel and found out that the breech plug was non removable.

I know some guys who got the breech plugs stuck in their Savages. They had to send the rifles in to Savage to fix.

abc,we've had several come into our shop and we have an expert machinist who drills small holes in the center(making sure of center) and then uses a little larger bit and then a little larger bit each time trying to use an easy out, after several drillings with each bit getting larger, eventually an easy out brings it out, sometimes the breechplug left is only a couple thousandths thick, but it does work

If you're sure it's a threaded plug, take a piece of 1/4 x 1-1/4 by 4" long flat bar, drill a hole a tad smaller than the o.d. of the plug near one end. Center the hole on the plug, weld it to the plug, lots of weld, let it cool so it can shrink, put the barrel in a strong padded vise- I use felt for padding. Tap it with a 2 lb hammer and it should turn right out.

    Guaranteed! Ain't been wrong yet.

and tell the genius to use anti-seize on breech plugs in the future.
