Only if the brass was brittle from the factory or if the person loading it was overworking the brass. A huge neck dia in a sloppy chamber would also lead to this. As for a first time firing creating a cracked neck,..that would be brittle brass. You can either send it back for a new bag,...or anneal the necks prior to using the remainder of the cases.

5mm, I have found my 223 wssm likes to shoot on the hot side but..........if I load close to the published max loads I begin to split some of the necks. be careful to check everyone every time. In nearly 350 shots (loaded 2,3,and 4 times) I have split six cases.

    5mmgunguy,

I've been having a little bit of the same problem with my 25 WSSM necks that I loaded hot a time or two. I now keep them a grain under max and have a long barrel to more than make up for the velocity lost.

There's a bit more sizing of the short mag cases since mfrs start with a fatter case. So I suspect the mfrs may be shorting you in the annealing between case forming stages dept.
I would anneal a half dozen case necks to below the shoulder and see if it makes a difference.

    Annealing is the plan.

Yes annealing is the solution, works like a charm
