I have an old Iver Johnson single barrel shotgun wich has an unusual barrel release mechanism. In front of the firing trigger is a release trigger for the barrel. I have looked in various books and web sites and have not seen anything like it. Any idea what model it could be and its value?

the iver johnson shotgun asked about here and the one in the auction number given are called "ring trigger model" for want of a better name. the official catalog name for the model is "iver johnson ejector single gun". when the removable hinge pin was modified in 1900 the name was changed to "iver johnson semi-hammmerless automatic ejector single gun" and advertized as the improved 1900 model. this model was iver johnson first modern single barrel (self-adjusting barrel latch) and was manufactured between 1896 and 1908.

this model as well as all other iver johnson single barrel shotgun manufactured before 1909 should be considered safe only with black powder cartridge pressures. these single guns also have a shorter chamber than the iver johnson single barrel manufactured after 1909.

there are no known serial numbers records for this model but there anly appears to be a single serial number series starting a 1 and goin up to an unknown number.
