If you have them in a gun stock your house is probably infested with them. Call a reputable exterminator quickly!

-It would be interesting to know the situation that prompts your question. That sounds pretty unusual to me; I'd like to know!

LocoFred, if this is a military stock, and has been teated with cosmoline, and who knows what, be very careful how you approach these devils, they can be visous. I would suggest you wave a well seasoned and wet pine board in front of them. May save your life! Tom

Yes, it was a German Wheelock pistol whose stock disintegrated in shipment
    to the USA.
There was nothing recognizable of the stock except part of the ball
    of the grip.

Thanks everyone. I don't have them but with firewood season approaching and never sure who's all on the wood and some probably not wanting to go in the fireplace. I think I would sooner error in being too cautious with something irreplaceable, so just wandering.

I have seen gunstocks that were attacked by boring beetles, but not termites.

Wood worm, whatever kind of critters they are, wood worm is common damage found in stocks of antique guns - flintlock, wheellock, etc.
I have repaired some that were so bad that the inside of the stock was like a dry sponge. A screwdriver could be thrust into it. The repair is done by filling with a dilute epoxy that sets up to a sort of hard plastic.

The worms destroy the wood but leave the outside almost intact, possibly because they don't/can't handle it because of soaked in varnish or other finish. Typically there will be some worm holes on the surface, which may or not indicate serious interior damage.

    Been there, Done that!
