-These things are usually screwed in, but some manufacturers will use epoxy. Whatever works, I guess. I think most manufacturers will use a post-mounted bead, with the post threaded 3-56.

To replace it, if you can't get a handle on the stub of the existing post to remove it, you would drill out the existing post and go up a notch to a bead site with a 6-48 threaded post.

At this time you can pick a larger or smaller bead or a white (aluminum or ivory) bead vs. a gold bead. You can probably get the new bead sight at Brownells or Midway.

Drill out the existing broken sight post (all the way through the barrel). Thread the hole for 6-48, use a permanent thread locking compound on the new sight post screw threads and screw in the new sight bead. Wipe away any surplus thread compound. Use a small needle file and carefully file the post flush with the inside of the barrel. Dress up the file marks with wet 400 grit wet/dry sandpaper.

-I was giving this some more thought and you might want to consider advising your friend to take the gun to a good gunsmith since you have not done this kind of work before. Just to play it safe. There are some risks you take by working on the gun (drill bit "walks" all over the barrel, etc.) and unless you're ready to pay for fubars, you probably ought to stay away from it.
