I don't how you define "authentic". If you think it means "made in Germany during the war", well, I guess you can call their K98 authentic. But, they have been refinished, & are imported marked. So, they will never be collectible.

Or, if you like the rifle ddhotbot is selling, these are really unissued. But, they were made in Yugoslavia after WWII, so, again, not really collectible.

It all depends upon what you are looking for.

Ralph, It would depend on what you are thinking is authentic. They are not the configuration of a German military Mauser. Germans may have overseen the making of some of the parts in Yugoslavia where the M48 is from.
I know of a number of people that have ordered a Mitchell Mauser and are happy with them for what they are; a New Old Stock (NOS) Model 98 Mauser.

Uhhh...sorry, but I do NOT like what they are about. Back in the days when I was younger and more naieve, I bought one of the first guns they imported into the country. Looked like (cosmetically speaking)it had been up an Elephants butt for a month. I have since set it up as a scout after painstakingly refinshing the stock with Tung oil. It looks really good and shoots well enough to keep. If I had it to do over again, I would buy a few RC's and find a keeper from those REAL German guns.

    Check out this guy:

    http://www.empirearms.com/

This is a very reputable internet military arms dealer.
Click on "military rifles," then click on "Russian capture 98 Mausers."
These are rifles that were captured by the Russkies during the war.
They are not "intact," in that they were all disassembled by the Russians in the fifties, the parts mixed up, and then put back together. So, no matching numbers.
But they are German made Mausers that were taken on that long march into Russia during WW2.
You can get one with swastikas intact for $250, that would be a pretty cool rifle.
I would love to have one, to me, matching numbers are not all that important.
I have bought several guns from Dennis and he is a first class dealer, if you are unhappy, 100 per cent refund within 3 days of receipt of gun, no questions asked.

If you want a pretty rifle go with Mitchell's. But beware, they refinish, and often call post-war Yugoslav rifles "German". On the other hand if you want a true historic collectable go with Empirearms, or AIM surplus, or any other reputable dealer.

They are nice but over priced. If you want one I would look around at the auctions to get one cheaper than from Mitchells.

    More of the same bud.
Mitchells, to my best description, are excellent pimps. I've done business with them, and I'm not unhappy about it.

They market a virginal looking piece, beautiful.

If you want a beautiful piece that just lies about her age and heritage....GO FOR IT...you may really enjoy it. Refinished, yes, just like make-up. Shoots, yes. She has her advantages.

Then go ahead an buy an old gal from here or SOG or others that has original markings. The part s/n's will not be original match, they may be e-penned to match (instead of stamped), but it is all there.

Some people will scortch me for this, but you could buy an old girl and run her through 'finishing school' and have whatever you want to say it is....a la Mitchells.

    ENJOY !
