C&P from the Ohio Regulations:

A Hunter CAN do the following:

3. Use certain handguns during the youth deer gun season and deer gun season. These handguns must: (a) have a barrel length of not less than 5 inches, (b) use straight-walled cartridges and (c) be .357 caliber or larger.

From Wikipedia:

Specifications
Parent case: .30-06 Springfield
Case type: Rimless, straight
Bullet diameter: .451 in (11.46 mm)
Neck diameter: .473 in (12.01 mm)
Base diameter: .476 in (12.09 mm)
Rim diameter: .480 in (12.19 mm)
Case length: .898 in (22.81 mm)
Overall length: 1.260 in (32 mm)
Primer type: Large pistol

And, notice in the picture that the case body had no taper and no neck, therefore it is a straight-walled case.

Ithaca4me - you need to contact the Ohio DNR again and have them explain to you why the .45 ACP is not legal. By their own definition, it is legal.

I agree. I even looked into the actual regs- not just the manual put out by OH Dept. of Natural Resources but the actual general code, and it wasn't any more specific.

I would make a guess the Muzzle velocity and energy isn't great enough.

I don't get the stright case on the ACP brass, the case has a extractor grove and the case in not continuious to the rim. I also think that you would want something that has a higher volisity and more range to hunt larger game. I would choose a .357 or .44 magnum with the six inch barrel to hunt with.

In Virginia pistol round has to be 350 FT/PB muzzle energy. I have killed a number of deer with chest shots with 45acp and H&G 68BB linotype bullet loaded to about 875 fps . one shot kills all ran less then 25 yards [:p][:p]. This semi wadcutter cuts a BIG hole and does mush up to about .50 in diameter on big deer with no bones hit many of the bullets will stop just under the outboard hide. [:D]

Look at a dead deer. It is similar to a human in size of chest, lungs and heart. the ribs are a bit bigger and the shoulder plate it a tough bone.

A lot of humans have got killed by a single ball 45 through the chest. If you shoot a deer with a 45 and puncture both lungs and-or hit the important blood vessels, heart or aorta the deer will die from blood loss rather quickly. It is imperative you don't hit the shoulder plate or humerus head with the shot. The 45 is a big bullet and may not get through.

A central nervous system hit will anchor the deer in its tracks.

I agree with everything everybody is saying on the board. But I can not change what the ODNR does or how they interprut their own laws. I think it is silly but I am sure they have a very good reason LOL!

Well I'll call and argue the .45 ACP and .45 Auto Rim case with them, if for no other reason than hoping they'll make their regs clearer.

The whole regulation is very poorly written, since "(c) be .357 caliber or larger" would include .38 Special, .38 S&W, .38 Long & Short Colt.....none of which is adequate for deer.

If that DNR pinhead thinks that an extractor groove is part of the case; look at 44Mag, 357Mag, 30-30WCF, 50BMG, or 155mm Howitzer rounds which ALL have "extractor cuts" along the rim. Otherwise, you'd have to push 'em out the breech end of the barrel!

I think this has been said in past thread, but it seems like they need to clearify those rules. Maybe to say RIMMED straight wall. Otherwise from whats written it seems like 45acp would be ok as long as you got that 5" of barrel. Or do they maybe allow other rimless cases, just not 45 acp???

The Iowa DNR regs just has a list of all the calibers that are legal in handguns. I think its 357 mag is the smallest, though I always go just shotgun or sometimes muzzleloader.
