Rechambering a Garand

I have a match Garand with a Kriger barrel in 308 with 5000 plus rounds through it. It won't hold the 9 ring at 600 anymore and with my primitive, home-made bore scope has a fair ammount, maybe 1/2~3/4 inch, of throat erosion. I'm fairly frugal (cheap as hell) and was wondering if I could get away with having it rechambered to 30-06. Is that do-able? That would take care of the throat erosion and save me the $500 for a new barrel job. Any opinions out there??

no, the .308 shoulder diameter is larger than the same point on a .30/06 chamber. Yes, I know about the .308 adopters to shoot .308 in a /06 chamber but the /06 reamer will not 'clean-up' a .308 chamber.

The alternative is to scrap the barrel and bucks.
Why not try it and have Lee make you a set of dies by running '06 die cutting reamers in a set of 308 FL and seating dies.
You could try std '06 brass in the modified chamber and see how that works. Have a broken shell extractor on hand.
