Winchester Model 12-12 Ga

So I just got this gun from my grandmother; previously my grandfathers. I plan on using it to duck hunt tomorrow as it is opening weekend here in Arkansas. It didn't have a plug, so I took it to the local pawn shop to get one. I was informed there that it would be a bad idea to use steel shot with this gun.
I know this gun is somewhat of an antique, but my grandmother requested that I hunted with it at least once in honor of my grandfather, who I never knew. Ive never duck hunted, and I own no other guns. So what are my options here? Get another gun? Can I not use steel shot, and if so why not? What other kinds of shot are there?
Thanks guys.

    Heavy Shot works very well and does not have the problems of steel:

    you can make a plug using a wood dowel. no need to buy one. but it is a hard job to take it apart and install w/o gun experience.

    cant you use bizmuth shot or copper shot out of those old bbls instead of steel??

    Hello;
    Dont use steel in your model 12 unless you want to risk ruining the barrel...these older guns were made with softer and thiner barrel steel than modern guns and steel shot can buldge the choke and score the bore...

    You can use Bismuth , tungsten POLYMER, tungsten MATRIX and some new types of softer nontoxic shot in your model 12....steel and the tungsten iron shot shells are not for use in you classic model 12....

    If you cant find any of the SOFT shot nontox shells B4 the hunt Id pass on the hunt or purchase a mossburg or remington 870 express and use steel in it.....save your grandfathers model 12 for hunting that does not require nontox shot or hunt ducks with it only after finding some of the softer nontox shells...

    BTW just so you dont get sticker shock...the soft nontox shotshells that can be used in older shotguns are about 3X the price of lead or steel shot...
