I have a 44-40 serial # 95322 A Model 1873 Was carried by a Canadian engineer surveying for the railroad. His name is carved in the stock. Also have pictures dated 1906 and earlier of him and his crew. I have no idea how you tell the condition but everything works and I have fired the gun. Looks like all the parts are there. Any info would be appreciated.

    brm,
Welcome to the forums. Your model 1873 Winchester was made in 1880-81 era, without pictures, and knowing the owners name is carved in the stock, my WAG would be $1,000.00 to $1,500.00 probably closer the the first figure. Hope this helps.
    For what it's worth.

The name carved in the stock could be interesting. For example, if the piece letters with the Cody Museum, and the letter shows a shipping address near where someone with the same name resided in Canada when it was shipped, then you will have a fairly good case toward building an early history for this rifle, since you have a picture of the owner to boot, especially if the picture shows his name. Provenance goes a long way toward increasing the value. Therefore it would be good if you could take and post pictures of the rifle here. Bert will be able to help you with appraising your rifle if you do.
    What's next?

$1500 would be on the low end of the value range for a Second Model 1873.
