question on necking brass up and down

Which is easier? To neck brass up? Or down? All I am looking at is about .012 inch either way. Some people have told me necking down is better and more consistent than necking up, true or false?

Neither is "hard" relative to the size change you gave. A tapered expander will make that change w/o much chance of off center or out of round necks. Sizing down is not a problem if your die supports the shoulder area as you neck down. A large change when necking down or shortening the case will require a neck thinning operation.

Like Mobuck said, neither should be a problem for that much change, but You've got my curiosity. I wondered if you might be making 7-08 and wondering whether to come down from .308 or up from .243, but that wouldn't fit your .012 guideline. Where would you be starting from on either end and where do you hope to end up?

It is a 4.6MM with a bullet diameter of .184, so it would be down to .17 cal (.172) or up to .19 cal (.198). about .012 each way.
