Could I buy a used Savage striker or a Rem XP-100 and bring it into CA? I don't think so because it isn't on the list of currently approved guns, right? That sucks!!

Wrong...........Handguns not on the approved list may be brought into calif by persons moving into Calif, but need to be registered with DOJ within 60 days using the "New resident handgun ownership report".

Go to the Calif DOJ website and you can print a copy of the needed form. Or Google "Calif DOJ FAQ" and go to question #25.

The "approved handguns" list is for new handguns sold in the state by dealers. Private party transfers and guns owned by new residents moving here are exempt.

So I could have a private party transfer from outside of CA to me inside CA for say a used Savage Sriker?

Transfer of firearms across STATE LINES need to go thru a FFL, with very few exceptions (inheritances, etc)

Single shot handguns such as the T/C, Savage, Weatherby and XP are exempt from the CA list so long as they meet a modest OAL of about 10" with barrel attached. The mistake some CA FFLs make is that they look for the handgun on the list to make certain they're OK, won't find them on the list because they are exempt.

Go through an FFL & you're OK, you don't need to do a PPT. In fact, a PPT in CA must be between two CA residents. You can't do the typical CA PPT across state lines.

I'm glad I don't live in California! Of course if its up to Hil and the gang my state will go that direction too!

No, Private Party Transfers (PPT) are for 2 residents of Calif, not for one out of state and one in state. Also, PPT's have to be done thru an 01 FFL.

You original question referenced just bringing a handgun into Cal when you move here, not about transfering ownership. That was what my original response was to.

Oops - my mistake also, thought you were already inCArcerated and wanted to order from out of state. Bring whatever you want, so long as it isn't a CA assault weapon.

Ok. Lets see if I can end some of the confusion. I am already living in the "wonderful" state of democrat controlled CA. FYI look what they have done to CA, they could do it to all of the US if we elect them there too. So don't!! What I want to do is buy a used Savage striker outside of CA and have it shipped to an FFL in CA so I can register it and then pick it up and use it on ground squirrels. The question is can I?

Dont think so. For the gun to come into Calif from an out of state seller it would either have to be "on the list" or "exempt from the list".

The Savage Striker is neither. If you can find someone "in" Calif with one for sale you can then do a PPT, but both of you would have to be present when the PPT takes place with the 01 FFL.

The catagories exempt from the list are PP Transfers, C&R Handguns, certain Single Actions, and pawn shop consignment/ returns.
