Yes, a rifle is OK as long as the reciever of the rifle is an FFL holder. Most of the time if it is shipped UPS the customer drop off employee will want to see a copy of the FFL but this is not a written requirement as I am not an FFL holder and have sucessfully done it both ways. AS long as the Recievers FFL # is in the info box of the form that is filled out (on Computer at UPS). It does not appear on the actual label but can be referenced by UPS.

And, make sure that your dealer is willing to accept delivery from a private seller; not all are.

Have the seller send a copy of their drivers license to verify they sold the gun. Piece of cake.

Ya got that right. I've lost out on several auctions because the dealers around here are paranoid about taking in a gun from a private seller. A couple of them even insist it's against the law even though I've proven it's legal. It pizzes me off. [:(!]

I always thought it had to be sent through a dealer, but I was told otherwise by an FFL holder yesterday. He also warned that some dealers will tell you it's illegal for a private party to send a firearm, so that the dealer can collect his five-and-twenty.

I'm not selling any handguns, but does this apply to handguns as well as rifles? I'm thinking of applying for a C&R FFL. Will that allow me to accept C&R handguns from private parties?

Ref: C&R- a C&R IS a FFL- it is limited in the firearms that are covered by that license. California has some state laws on handguns that pre-empt the C&R- but in most states, if you hold a C&R FFL, you can recieve a C&R handgun, rifle, or shotgun from a private individual. Check your state laws. If you are in California, go to Realtor.com, find a house elsewhere, and MOVE!

Although I fully admit to being a Liberal, I'm happy to say that I no longer live in my native state. Anyway, the weather's more interesting up here. [;)] (Not so good for flying, though. [:(] )

Anytime a firearm is sold across state lines it only takes one FFL dealer. Either a patron buys it from an FFL face to face in the state of purchase or the long gun is sent to an FFL. That's the way the Feds want it. If a Fed is telling you otherwise, report him. Just make sure it isn't an FFL sending to a private party in another state.

Not in the People's Republik of New York it won't. A C&R handgun must be shipped to an FFL dealer who has a New York State handgun seller's license. You can buy one from a holder of a NY State pistol permit if that handgun is registered. Otherwise, even though the handgun may come under FFL regs as a C&R, NY will charge you with possession of an unlicensed handgun. Antiques (pre-1899) are exempt UNLESS you plan on shooting it or have all of the components with the gun (powder, caps, balls) in which case it must also be registered.
