Youth gun ?

My son is 9, avarage build, I can't decide on an all around youth gun. He has a 223 New England but I wanted something a little bigger for hogs and deer. I was looking at a 250 & 257 but have had no experience with either. I want something with less recoil than a 270 but a bigger bullet than a 243. Has anyone shot these or 6mm, 25-06 etc. Thanks.

25-06 was bout right for my nine year old....except he was ten actually at the time.

You might consider the 7mm-08 and the .260 rem.

A 308 win would do the trick.

If you reload there is an easy solution. Hodgdon reloading site has "youth loads" I use these in my Mosin M44. Reduces recoil and muzzle flash. It is only safe with the loads and powder recomended. http://www.hodgdon.com/data/youth/index.php

Both my sons were shooting a 25-06 about that age. Minimum recoil, flat shooting rifle, perfect for deer, antelope, hogs, and javelina pigs.

I've taken mule deer, pronghorn, white tail deer, and one elk with my 25-06. If you reload your own ammo, you can tailor loads that would be even more suitable for a youngster.

Just a note...6mm Remington and 243 Win are ballistically about the same.

That's my three cents worth...taking into account inflation index. [:)]

My 10 yr old loves his 7mm-08. Great all around cartridge and easy to find or load your own!

I have a 250-3000 savage (mod 1899). I was amazed at the light recoil. My nephew has a savage youth in .243 that is a good deer rifle. He's not a youth anymore but still prefers it. As salvage points out, its near identical to 6mm.

Here's a left turn for you. What about a Marlin lever gun in 44 Magnum? Small and easy handling and you could go down to 44 special to ease the recoil transition. I consider the 44 Mag. with Cor-bon loads to be about minimum for deer but with an emphasis on shot placement you should get very good results. As a cost saving measure, how about either a lever gun in 30-30 (that should come used in VERY good shape for about $200) or one of the old Savage 340's in 30-30? The Savages will allow you to get the most from the 30-30 round and allow you to use much more efficient spitzer type bullets?!?! Told you this was a left turn but I think you should be given some differing choices. By the way...I really love the 257 Roberts round! Good punch for a 25 cal!
