1851 Navy

I have what looks to be a 1851 Navy revolver. It is rusty and not in very good shape but a couple of the cylinders are still loaded. To remove the lead bullets which are very oxidized, I've been told to put into a bucket of water and then drill out the lead. Any other suggestions?

I have an opportunity to buy a gun of historical significance. It is engraved on the backstrap "Thomas A. Butler, 101st Regt." It is #119xxx. It is engraved (not factory) and inlaid with gold and platinum. T.A. Butler was awarded the Victorian Cross (England) for his valor in the Indian Uprising (1858). He was reported to have carried this gun, which he received earlier, when he did his deed of valor. This gun was last publicly sold at auction (Sotheby's) in 1972 for 1000 pounds. The gun's barrel is stamped with London address, but there are no other markings on the gun, other than the matching SN's and the Colt's Patent on left of frame. The gun is very sharp--may have been reblued at time of engraving, but not sure. Does anyone know the value of this gun today? Any other info on it/past owners? Thank you.

Welcome to the Ask the Experts Forum: My suggestion is to talk with Sotheby...They will have a record of the sale and I'm sure be able to give you a ball park Figure of Currant estimated value...Having a London Colts already puts this Gun at over FOUR FIGURE's...and with substaniated paperwork from Southeby's probably Puts it over the FIVE FIGURE mark.....Its my considered opinion that if this gun was Sold at Auction in 1972 for 1000P/S...and having survived another 32 years, this same Gun should fetch close to 15,000P/S.....Again...Talk to Southeby's.......I wish You Well in your search......Respectfully Yours............
