Is it fair, no. Lots of folks shoot a 20 gauge, and lots of them aren't retired women. LOL I shoot both, depending on what I am hunting, or the clays that I'm shooting. I've even been known to shoot skeet and trap with a 410, and I'm neither female or retired. The truth is, if you become proficient with a smaller gauge/bore shotgun, you can move up to larger gauges and shoot better. At least that's my theory.

Id much rather watch somebody break clays with a smaller guage. I cant hit a thing with 410, and it never fails to amaze me when I see people breaking clays with them.

funny, last time i checked, i dont have a *....and i won the virginia state skeet championship class AA with a 20ga in 1995! out of 500 competitors, only 3 ran them 100 straight and i beat them in the shoot off! funny.... i did it again in 1996 at the armed forces skeet shoot and had no one on the field who could run them in 20ga in any class! i won it with the only 100 straight that day! did it the next day in 28 ga too! historically, the 12ga was considered a girls gun around 1900 and a real mans gun was 10ga...or punt gun![:p] be nice when you talk 20 ga around some shooters. they can wax em just as good if not better and make your 12 ga (or you) look like a girl! then again...i know girls who can shoot 250 straight in 20ga! can you? Bobski:
I would love to see someone trying out Skeet with a Punt-Gun. [:D]

Well, some 16 gauge and 20 gauge shotguns are very light and can give you quite a kick.
I know of a few lady hunters who've jumped directly to 12 gauge from their "Ladies gun".

    I'd pick a 12 gauge any day.

a professional 20ga skeet gun should weigh 7 1/2 or 8 lbs or more and light guns with tubes installed, maybe even more. a well fit 20ga doesnt budge with 7/8 oz loads if its fit right. most girls cant hold 8lb guns, thus they buy very light 12ga guns and shoot 7/8 oz 12ga loads instead of full house 1 1/8oz. but for a man to shoot a semi 20ga or a tubed 12 with 20ga tubes, its heaven. i know a world champion who shoots his 12ga events in 20ga. im curious to know exactly what gun your friend is shooting. what model? if its fitted right, i'd be afraid. it will match a 12ga shot for shot!

My 12 guage O/U has full inserts to go to 20 guage, 26 guage, and/or .410. Just depends on how I happen to feel that day. Go with the 26 guage a lot....[:)]

Recoil is a matter of weight of gun, gun fit, weight of the shot charge, and velocity. you can't really get around physics, so 3 of the 4 are basically constants. The one things that you can control is gun fit. Get the drop right, and the cast off right and your on your way. There are many other variables that effect the problem of recoil but what it really boils down to is that if you put the shot on the target --it breaks. It doesn't know if the shot comes out of a 12, 16, or 20 gauge. If there is an advantage I believe it belongs to the 20 on skeet( I know the 20 has a handicap of 1/2 bird per 25). I've just seen too many top flight 12 gauge shooters loose to 20 gauges to believe that at skeet yardages the 12 has any great advantage. 7/8 to 1 oz. of number 9's on target is going to break the target no matter which gauge barrel the shot originated. At longer ranges the number of shot a hull will hold can make a difference but skeet ranges are real close. Bobski knows what he is talking about, manhood doesn't enter into the equation--except in the never , never land of hollywood. Anyone who thinks it takes a man to shoot a 12 gauge ought to see Louise Mandrell shoot sometime.

I shoot skeet w/ an all guage set 12, 20, 28, and 410. As you get better, you can try it with the smaller guages. My personal favorite is the 28 guage.

the question is when are you going to get a real mans gun that will challenge you? or is that the only way you can win is by out gunning him?

it's not the type of gun you have in the heat of a battle that counts, only if you have enough ammo for it, lets face it, a gun without ammo is only as good as a base ball bat!!

Is it cool to bust your brothers balls? Absolutely. Is it cool to refer to your hairy 350 pound 6'8 neighbor as an old women when he takes out his 20 gauge? What do you think?

If your just poking some fun at your bro then it's all in good humor, but if you actually believe that shooting a small gauge shot gun makes anyone any less of a man then your being ridiculous. I'll fire anything that can fly and still have a blast doing it. A 20 gauge would be totally proficient for blowing anyones head off who see's fit to make fun of me shooting it [;)] Hope that answers your question.
