I want to get a cheap, accurate 22 for my 11 yr old for squirrel hunting .Any thoughts on which is more accurate or better value. Want a clip fed one. Thank you experts!

At the range this past Sunday shooting a custom 25-06 with a Unertl 24 power scope at 100yds. A young kid took the bench beside me. He was shooting a Savage 22lr left hand bolt action clip fed rifle.

I said to myself, this kid should be at the 50 yd range.

Well after a round of shooting we walked down to check the targets.
This kid was shooting in and around the 10 ring consistently.
I was truly amazed. He said he bought the Savage because it came in left hand action and it was cheap. He paid a $100.00 for it and was shooting Federal 22lr ammo.
Made a believer out of me.
Get your son the SAvage. I believe you and he won't be dissapointed.

In addition to the last post, I forgot to mention that he had an inexpensive 3x9 scope mounted on the rifle, a Simmons I believe it was.

I don't know much about the Marlin's , but I have a Savage Mark II (wal-mart special), with a 4 power scope. The wife shot a 2" Shoot-N-C target to pieces with 30 rounds of Winchester ammo at 100 yards. The Savage mark II has a pretty good trigger pull, comes from the store with the scope (boxed separately), smooth bolt, sythetic stock and 10 round clip. Great value, especially for teaching a youngster. Good luck whatever you decide.

As far as the Marlins go...there isn't a thing wrong with them in my opinion. If I were given my choice however, I would definately go with the Savage! I am a Savage fan and like their new Accutrigger centerfire models, so one would assume their rimfires, econo model or not are very likely superior to the Marlin, even if just marginally! Shot alongside a really nice young lady (all of about 12!) up in Wisconsin 3 weeks ago and she was taking particular delight in shooting her name (in cursive, no less) using the aforementioned Mark II Wal-Mart Special package. She claimed to be a newbie and her father said such was the case. He wanted to get her a nice basic rifle package on the cheap and was more than a little embarassed that she was outshooting him with his highly customized 10/22 @ 50yds.! His and my excuse was "young eyes"...I suspect the nice little beginners Savage had something to do with it though!
