I have two French Mas semi's converted to .308 and both shoot great. Like all French weapons they have to be very clean and very lightly lubed, this is from my Dad, a WWII vet (he put a scope on his and he loves it). Also compare the ballistics of the original French round to the 7.62 x 54 NATO, they are foreign and probably use NATO specs which are slightly reduced from our .308 Winchester hunting bolt actions. I also shoot M1 Garands in 30.06 and M1A's in .308 Win. and have to carefully pick ammo or reload for them. To cut short the .308 Win. chambering was to save on the cost of brass, not to make the rifle more capable. Stick to a 80-90% load and hold solid and mash and release the trigger. My son (a lineman on the football team) found he could hold his finger and go through a mag. of ten in a couple of seconds). A scolding from me and the range officer stopped this.
