AR15 question

edited January 2007 in Ask the Experts
I have a fellow who wants to trade an AR for another item I have and has given me the description below. He has two AR's for trade, but I really don't know what 6.8 SPC is, or stands for.

"I've got one in 6.8 SPC and one in 5.56/.223."

I already have an HBAR Colt, but would not mind having another to shoot, I just want to understand the difference.

EDIT:

I did a search on 6.8 in the forum. Disregard my inquiry.

EDIT II
Armalite,
Thanks for the description. Now, I need to decide if I should trade for the 6.8 or the 5.56. Since I akready have the 5.56 in the HBAR model, I may make the trade for the 6.8. Who knows, the ammo looks pricey and it may be just another "gimick" like the 45GAP. A round that may be harder to get as time goes on.
Thanks,

Aaron

I was at the range today and after a couple hundred rounds my gun would not a pick up a round from the magazine. I tried 2 Lancer and one PMAG. With the bolt open and the bolt release pressed it will chamber a round like it should and go bang, but will go click on the second. Every thing looks right when I took it apart.

i am pretty new to this firearms thing, bought my first pistol as a christmas present for myself this past year. anyways i have been considering buying an ar15 and asked a more knowledgeable friend which way he thought was the best to go. his response was build your own and recommended american spirit arms. after reading on another website's forum where asa was basically trashed i wanted to hear some unbiased or biased from another site opinions on the best route to go for a first timer. i hope this doesn't come across as just plain stupid. thanks for taking the time to read this.-dave[:I]

Now I have only owned 1 AR, my current one buily on a Colt A1 upper and a Stag Lower. Here is the one thing about it that bugs me. When I shoot the thing it just feels odd, like it a wobbling action that almost feels like its pogo stickign off my shoulder a little. Is there a way to get around this? I have heard of bolt bouncing with ARs, and I figure it may be this. It defineately is a separate feel from the initial recoil, kind of like a Browning A5 has the two hit recoil, but it feels like this gun is pulling forward and wobbling. Its hard to describe, but being an HK91 and FAL man I figured I would ask around.

Should the Ar15 be able to cock with the safety in the "Safe" position?

Are you hearing the buffer tube and recoil spring bouncing in the stock? Put a little grease on the spring and it will quiet down. Otherwise get yourself a good sling and tighten it down so that gun doesn't move at all.

all the M-16's in the Army make that noise, its annoying. I guess grease it

my sp-1(a-1 style) upper and buttstock did that until I replaced it with a CAR style buttstock

I saw some lead weighys for the cleaning rod cavity, you think that might help?

That's what it's suposed to feel and sound like. When you don't feel/hear it is when you have a problem.[;)][8D]

Just a guess but you might try putting accu-wedges in the thing or "upgrading" the buffer to the hydraulic one available from Bushmaster/ My $.02 and might not be the cure at all

Olympic Arms also offer a pneumatic buffer system that will eliminate that "Sproing" sound in any AR-15 with an A2 stock. The cost is $59-$79 depending on the model you choose.

Yeah I already have and accu-wedge in it. I just hate the feeling of the recoil impulse. Makes it feel like I am shooting some spring powered BB gun on steroids.

    I agree totally with JBW1776...
I've been shooting AR-15's since 1966 or so and they even sounded
worse back then. But no recoil. We used to shot it off our chin (don't do this) to prove to people how little it kicked. When your young you don't think about how easy it would be to break a tooth off.

    Wehrmacht_45,

If you are feeling the action of the spring that is normal. If you are feeling a 'bump' at the carrier hitting all the way back you might look at changing your rounds. Or, changing your spring, better yet if you have the bucks, pneumatic or hydraulic buffers.
As far as the rounds go, do you reload or what do you buy? The reason I ask is because if the rounds burn too slow they send too much pressure up the gas tube and make the bolt bounce off the rear stop. This isn't usual with factory ammo but it does happen when excess slow powders get loaded with lighter bullets.
If you reload step up the powder speed. XMR2015 or 4198 should work. definately nothing slower than 4895. That will help reduce the pressure. I'm thinking somebody decided that since Varget is working well in bolt guns to put that in .223 rounds. It works great in bolt guns but not a good idea in AR's as it is a shade too slow.
