Before you let this guy do any work on your rifle. I would sit down and have a heart to heart discussion with him. The .450 Marlin is a belted/rimmed case, with a much larger head/rim diameter, then the 8mm Mauser the M-48 is originally chambered for. A lot of work is going to have to be done on the bolt and magazine to insure the .450 Marlin cartridge will feed/function through the action.

Unless you are just going to use this rifle as a single shot? Rebarreing is the least of your worries. My 2?.

    sixgunwillie,

Who did you end up calling to discuss your project? E-mail me if you don't want to announce it in public.

    Thanks!

    Best.

I don't mean to pee in your Wheaties, but as your going to be using a M 48 as a basis for your moose/bear rifle. Perhaps cartridges in the 35 Whelen/.358 Winchester class, would be more practical. Head & rim diameter is same as 8mm Mauser, i.e. no work will have to be done on bolt face. Some work will still have to be done on the magazine, to insure proper feeding though.

That and you will lose a round capacity more than likely. If this conversion was easy, it would be done routinely for low cost guide gun type applications, not unlike what Gibbs did with the Enfields in 45/70. Cost will be prohibitive, I should think, and what Rufe said about bolt face is really of prime concern when taking on a converison of this type. Siamese Mauser would liokely be a better aciton to play with too. Sorry for another "Peeing in your Wheaties" answere, but that is how I see the issue. Good luck whatever you decide.

    sixgunwillie,

you might, in your many discussions also pass along a question about the 9.3x57, Mauser based case. Feeds well... has enough knockdown at close-medium range... can fit five in a Yugo '98 action... Something to think about.

Rufe-snow. The 35 Whelen/358 Win suggestion is the best route to go. These are 2 of the most underrated cartridges ever created.
