Rem. 788 Bolt disassembly

Can someone give me some advise on the correct way to disassemble the bolt for the Remingtion Model 788 rifle, Looks like I am needing to replace the extractor. Also a source for this part would be appreciated. Thanks

The "NRA Guide to Rifles and Shotguns" has a IPB and disassembly instructions for the Rem. Model 788. GOOGLE, Gun Parts Corp, they have a extensive web-site for replacement firearms parts.

You do not HAVE to take the bolt apart to replace the extractor.

YOU DO HAVE TO REMOVE THE EJECTOR AND DRIVE OUT THE EXTRACTOR RIVET. YOU HAVE TO HAVE (MAKE) A RIVET BUCKING TOOL AND IT HELPS TO KNOW HOW TO 'MASH' THE NEW RIVET.

Thanks again for the replies. How do you remove the extractor. I see what looks like a pin holding the extractor ring on the bolt face but am unsure of the correct way to remove it. Also do you need to remove the ejector to do this. I assume you drive out the pin that seems to hold it in place? Any further info on this procedure would be appreciated.

The "pin" is the rivet, you will need to drill it out. The extractor can then be removed. To install the new one, lock the kids up so they won't hear thet kind of language, then insert the new rivit into the new extractor, use a steel rod, etc, to buck the rivit, and drive it with a punch. This is a job that a smith, with the correct tools, can do in five minutes, it should not take you more than five hours[:D]

You will need to drill or grind the rivet head off, and you do not need to remove the ejector.
Brownells has the parts needed.

"and you do not need to remove the ejector."... it's simple to remove the ejector and makes the job a hole lot easyer. if you tackel the job yourself be sure to order 3 rivets....they are very small and easyly lost[;)]

Thanks for the good info. one other question, do you drill out the rivit from outside the bolt of inside the bolt face?. Very difficult to see which has the rivit head.
