CB cap noise level

i live near and creek, and it turns out that some of my neighbors are possums and racoons. it seems as if none of them were notified that i am the new owner of my house and don't view them as welcome guests. i was thinking that killing a few would send a message to the others that i'm a not-so-nice guy when it comes to rodent visitors.

a friend suggested "dissuading" them with a pellet rifle, but a guy at the local gun shop said that unless i got them very close and got a good head shot, that a pellet rifle wouldn't be up to the task. he also said that if i choose to go this route, that i be ready with a baseball bat if a racoon decided to charge me.

he then suggested that i try a .22 rifle with CB cap ammo. he said that it's quieter than a pellet rifle. is this true? if we presume, hypothetically of course, that it's illegal to use a firearm in the city limits, would a neighbor be able to hear me shoot CB cap ammo?

as a last question, if my goal was to get an inexpensive .22 rifle for the job, what might you suggest i consider for a new rifle purchase or where might you recommend i go and what should i get if i want to get a nicer, used rifle?

A CB Cap would be very unlikely to kill either species humanely, and would be downright dangerous to shoot at a racoon. Your best bet would be to hire a trapper.

I'd want a full .22 LR at least for them, no need to make the poor beasts suffer.

Try liberally scattering some mothballs. A few boxes.

The hide (skin & fur) is fairly tuff. The low noise ammo may NOT give you a one round kill- and you still can wind up standing there saying "Well, your honor, it was like this...." Havahart makes a humane live trap that works for * and possums. Grapes make good bait. Cost of trap is far less than cost of rifle, ammo, and court costs.

I have killed about a dozen * with CB's (Win 67)...Most within 2-10 feet. Not the best...but a dead raccoon is a dead raccoon..! And the neighbors don't complain..

Possums are not dangerous or harmful. Raccoons are a pain. Trap them in a live trap and put a 22LR HP into the skull from 2 feet. the noise will be minimal. The raccoon will go to animal heaven to be with Saddam.

It sounds like you live in a city. I would check their laws before discharging a firearm in city limits. Some places, like the ones that have "Operation Exile",may have that kind of thing as a felony.

You can always purchase an Ol' Hound Dawg....It would be a lot cheaper to keep '*' and predators away than paying a heavy fine for discharging a Firearm in a City or Township......and keep in mind that discharging a firearm in said corporate limits is a Class 6 Felony...You lose the Right to Keep or pocess firearms...something to think about....

Had a similar problem with *, possums, skunks and woodchucks.
A large Havahart trap is the answer. Bait it with an unbroken raw egg
    or cat food.
The animals were transported about five miles and released either in the woods or in back of a row of restaurants across a major highway.
Chucks got a 22short to the head from about two inches or less in the garage or in the woods. The 22 short works, the CB doesn't.
Up close, the fur muffled the noise.
If you catch a skunk, approach the cage from behind a sheet and throw it over the cage. It can now be transported without spraying in your car trunk. Release it from behind the sheet and it'll just wobble off.
A neighbor's shepherd dog cornered a large * in front of our house once and I think the shepherd got the worst of it.

If you use a haveaheart be REALLY careful handling it. If it turns upside down and sometimes when they roll on their side the two doors release. Could get real exciting when you open your trunk to find an angry racoon sitting on your spare!

Havahart is the answer or a suppressed .22 with subsonic ammo if legal and allowable. I have a nursery in the country where using a .22 LR is not a problem but the trap gets a lot more than I can with a rifle at night. The * and armadillas turn over pots looking for grubs and make a real mess. The traps work well with a small dead fish.
