It fits half way between the 7mm rem mag and the 7mm-08. It use the same .284" diameter bullets as these do.

Ballistically and structurally it is very similar to the 270 with a much better choice of bullets for reloading.

I persoanlly think that the 280Rem or 7-06 is the best all around North American cartridge for all game short of the big bears. 30cal is, IMO, over kill for most deer size game. The 7mm in 140g has the same cross sectional density as a 30cal 165g bullet, but the 140g flys almost as flat as a 130g 270cal which is a great combo. Still when it really comes down to it there is a myrid of cartridges that will do for deer size game if the bullet placement is on target; 22cal to 458cal. So what it really comes down to is what the buyer/shooter/hunter wants to use. If your friend wants to get a 280Rem, more power to him. The down side is that factory loaded ammo will be hard to come by and will be limited in selection. The 280Rem has become a handloaders cartridge. Good luck in finding one....

I consider the 280 to be the minimum cartridge for elk. However the difference between the 280 and the 270 is so small that the target will never know the difference. The bullet selection for the 270 is much better leaving the 280 with few options to take advantage of its versatility unless you hand load. The only advantage of the 280 over the 30-06 is the "wow that's cool" effect. The major advantage of the 30-06 is on the heavy end of bullet weights, 180-220, which makes the 30-06 a better cartridge for elk, moose, and bigger bear.
