Are all Rem Model 700's in 270 caliber long action? I've seen quite a few model 700's on Ebay that are short action. What calibers are the short action stocks used for?
Ebay sells rifles?
270's are long action.
There are dozens, actually hundreds of cartridges that can be chambered in a Remington M700 whether it's a Long Action or Short Action. Listing all of them here along with a Long or Short designation would be and enormous amount of work and repetitious since the information is available in any of your reloading manuals and one of any of the dozens of reference books regarding cartridges and firearms.
Rather than list all of the cartridges and designators, here are the parameters that we use generally with regard to Long and Short actions:
Remington manufactures 2 action lengths but makes the Long Action long enough to accommodate the true Magnum length cartridges.
Long Action screw spacing = 7-1/4" center to center
Short Action screw spacing = 6-1/2" center to center
Magazine box interior length:
LA = 3.350" (roughly 30-06 length + a pinch)
AS = 2.850" (roughly .308 Win. length + a pinch)
LA for Magnum cartridges = 3.700" (roughly .375 H&H length + a pinch)
If you check your reloading manual you will usually see a drawing or a statement of OAL (OverAll Length) for each cartridge. The lengths will fall into one of these 3 categories. Another good reference to have on your bench is a copy of Cartridges of the World. It contains a wealth of material about current and many obsolete cartridges. You can pick up copies of this paper bound book at gunshows, used bookstores and from any of the internet book sellers.
Best.
"nononsense" I appreciate the specs you listed & it gives me a much better understanding of everything.
"dcloco" when I said I have been looking at Remington Model 700's on Ebay, I actually menat I was looking at replacement stocks for Remington Model 700's. Sorry for the confusion.
Thanks again,
