I have 2 25-20 cartridges that have the Rem-Umc headstamp, but are completely different. One is longer than the other, the shoulders don't line up and the cases are different lengths and the bases are different withs. Both are rimmed center fire. The longer ones case is 1-5/8" long and the base is .375 dia. The shorter ones case is 1-5/16" long and the base is .406 dia. Both have the REM-UMC head stamp, and both say 25-20 on the head

The longer is a 25-20 single shot

According to Cartridges of the World by Frank Barnes, there was a .25-20 Single Shot. It appeared about 1882. No commercial rifles have been available for this cartridge since the late 1920's. The .25-20 WCF is a shorter more bottlenecked version of this cartridge. Sounds like you may have one of each.

There are more than 1 25-20.
The one with the 1 5/16 case length is the 25-20 Marlin / 25-20 WCF (same cartridge, different name)

As the other fellows have pointed out, the longer (thinner) cartridge is the 25-20 Single Shot (S.S.). It was factory chambered in a fair number of Winchester Model 1885 Single-Shot rifles (most commonly in the low-wall), and it was also found in a decent number of Stevens single-shot rifles. It is superbly accurate, and was very popular from the late 1880s through to WW I.

The .25-20 WCF was deaigned because the .25-20 (aka, the .25-20 single shot) was too long for the 1892 Winchester. The S.S. is a good round; brass is available; and at least until recently RCBS dies were available for it.

OK, ya made me look. The box of remington 25-20 shells I've got are 1 9/16" long and the base is .403. the box says "for use in all rifles". They've been going thru my 92 winchester fine. Jim
