Am still getting items together for my project 300 H&H on savage 110 action with a Kreiger barrel, my question is midway has recoil lugs from .200 to .500 and I'm not sure whether to go the middle of the road .250 or .300 or if the .500 would be best.

Give me some what fors and how comes

Thanks guys

    dpmule,

The critical factors for recoil lugs are:

The faces of the lug need to be parallel.

The barrel tenon shoulder (or nut) needs to be square to the bore line.

The face of the receiver needs to be square to the bore line of the bolt.

The lug needs to be bedded parallel and perpendicular with NO contact at the bottom, front and sides of the lug.

Some of this is offset by the floating bolt face of the Savage but it's better to start out with the best first.

While the .300 H&H is long cartridge, it's not overtly powderful with tons of recoil. I've had good success when I used the standard Remington lug (0.1875") with a Remington M700 chambered for the .375 H&H. The difference is that I grind all lug faces parallel then clean up the outside edges. Then I bed the entire receiver and lug correctly and stress free.

Midway states that the 0.300" lugs are out of stock and I think that the 0.500" are really overkill. You best bet is to get the 0.250" and then make sure that it's been ground correctly. If you want to stay in that price, Darrell Holland has the same thickness lugs available also. They are under the heading Remington 700.
