I have purchaced a old Winchester that has had a repair {braised} on the lower part of the frame where the serial number is--IE under the lever. Due to the repair the last didget of the serial number has been eliminated. How can I find out what the last number was as I would like to find out when it was mfg. and where or when it was shipped.

It may not be possible to ever deteremine what the last digit was, but even without it, it is possible to narrow down the DOM to within a month or do of the actual date. The original Winchester factory ledgers (at the Cody Firearms Museum) will not tell you where, or to whom, an individual firearm was shipped (in 99.9+% of the cases). It will tell you when it was received in the warehouse (considered to be the DOM by the BATF), and when it was shipped/sold. It will also tell you what the original configuration was... e.g. variant (Rifle or Carbine), caliber, barrel type and length, trigger type, sights (if special order), buttstock configuration, butt plate type (if special order), deluxe or checkered stocks, etc.
