Federal Top Gun Hulls/ Gold Medal Hulls???

I'm new to shotshell reloading and I think I've got a handle on most of it. My question is this, can you use the same recipe's for the federal gold medal hulls in the federal top gun hulls? The only difference I can find is the top gun hull has a cardboard basewad. I'm looking to build the following load: Federal Top Gun Hull, 17.5 gr. Clays, Rem. Fig8 wad, Fed. 209A primer, 1 1/8 oz. #7.5 magnum shot. The hodgdon manual shows this to be a pretty light pressure load in the gold medal hull so will it interchange? I've got around 1500 top gun hulls I'd like to get a few reloads out of if I can before I buck up and switch to AA hulls. any and all help will be appreciated!

Hi,Hookturnr, and welcome. The load books tell you to follow recipes exactly.Having said that,if that load you are trying crimps well,I would shoot it,although I'm kinda stuck on cci primers.[:)]

try the load in a few of those hulls and see how they crimp.if they are low use a filler too bring it up too where it gives you a good crimp.if its too tall then you have too use a shorter wad .hope this helps

Thx for the advice guys. I switched to the rem tgt12 wad and they crimp just fine. My only concern was whether or not the pressure spike risk was significant between the two hulls. From what I can find, the top gun hulls actually produce a lighter pressure than the gold medal hulls when using identical loads. I went through a few reloading manuals and found 9 different loads that when using the same components except for the hull you end up around 800 psi lower in the top gun hull. I'm gonna load a few up and see how they shoot and take it from there.
