The .375 R.U.M seems to be the chambering I've finally decided on for the only single shot rifle I intend to own. I've thought it over for quite some time. No real purpose for it at this time, although I can see where it will fill a niche in my collection[8D]
If ANYONE has any hands-on experience with this chambering, especially in a single shot configuration I would certainly appreciate your input. Of course anyone who has an intelligent opinion to share is welcome to chime in, as well.
Thanx in advance.

I have fired a .375 rum, a bit more 'snot' that a H&H. Customer paid me to 'sight in' his rifle[^] (the 'lead sled realy paid for itself that day[;)])

Yeah, it's not a chambering I'm anxious to fire at anything close to a rapid rate. The 270-300 gr pill with 2700 or so fps is about as big/hard as I'll EVER want to go, but it's ballistics are pretty impressive, all things considered.
    Was that a bolt-gun?
It'll 'prolly be the only rifle I ever own that you could say is "punishing" to shoot, but I've always wanted; A)An African Prairie/Dangerous Game capable rifle and B)A fairly unique, large caliber/bore single-shot.
    Thanx for the reply[:)]

"Was that a bolt-gun? "... yes, a stock rem. 700. These big bore rifles have more 'push' than 'snap' like the big .300 mags. and are a little easyer to shoot (.378wm excluled).

So what single shot are you getting? If it's a Ruger #1 I have a 375 H & H & a 458 Win Mag. The H & H is pleasant to shoot, the 458 a bit of a pounder but the #1 stock fits me well - a straight push back into the shoulder. No "face slap" from either one.

    I highly recommend Limbsaver.

I have seen 3 rifles chamberd in 375 Ultra, and all of them bolt guns. To say it is a little more punishing than the 375 H&H would be a bit of an understatement. I actaully enjoy shooting a 375 H&H, but the RUM was a bit much even for me to "enjoy". I agree also that the 378 Weathery is even more punishing, and markedly so! I prefer the H&H, as it has been doing it since 1912, and is still regarded as an EXCELLENT game stopper, and accurate too.

I agree with what Fletch said earlier about the "push" factor as well. The H&H 375 just sorts' rolls into you, where the 375 RUM is snappy like a 30 magnum, but with CONSIDERABLY more umph! For this reason I also enjoy the Lott more than the 458 Win Mag. Not sure just why, but the 458 Win Mag just snaps the hell out of me where the Lott, while delivering more, just sorta"slides" back on you. If you are looking at a dangerous game rifle, don't you think a double gun would be more practical? Unless you don't mind having your Cojones in your PH's hands after a botched first (and in the case of what you are talking about getting, LAST shot) shot? I have seen some guys who are REALLY fast on reloading a Ruger #1...even they aren't faster than a charging big cat!

    dfletcher & 1kydster:
Yes, the Ruger #1 (Safari)is what I have in mind.....
I had previously considered .458 Lott, thought it would be more than I'd care to experience, *LOL*
How would you compare the .375 R.U.M. to the .458 Lott?
As for actually using the rifle for dangerous game.......Maybe if I win the lottery, *LOL* But, yes I agree that a double-gun or a bolt would be the answer, regardless of the shooter's proficiency with the single-shot.
Thanx for the insight guys, care to add anything else?

I wanted a big bore for reasons not unlike yours. I ended up with two somehow and am very happy with both. The first is a Ruger No.1 in .458 Winchester Magnum with a Leupold 2.5X scope. The second is a CZ550 Safari in .375 H&H Magnum with a Leupold 1.5-5X. If I had to choose one, I guess I'd keep the .458. I almost bought a Remington M700 in .375 Ultra but after handling it, I thought it way too light in weight for the caliber. I'd go with the heavy Tropical Ruger No.1 in whatever caliber you choose. Neither of my rifles are really hard to shoot due to their weight. The worst kicker I own is a Ruger All-Weather in .338 Winchester Magnum. It gets your attention!
