keep new or shoot

I have just recently picked up a new marlin 1895gs ltd 45-70. They say it will become a collector eventually. My question is to shoot this gun or keep it new for the value, I have a very hard time buying something and not using it (pointless to me). Would the value be worth not shooting the gun?

Sparkey- This same question haunts me a bit also. I bought a very pretty Sako when I was a youngster and never gave a thought about not hunting with it. In new unfired condition it would be worth around 1500 today. I paid less than 200 for it. I gave it to my grandson knowing that he'll hunt with it also. I can remember every hunt and animal that fell to that rifle and have never regreted the so called "loss" in value. It's a personal thing. Mike

A gun is a tool. Would you buy a new hammer and not use it to drive nails? If you want to invest, buy stocks or bonds.

I've bought many old firearms that have been used and still very well taken care of and paid good money for them.. I just wish they could talk and tell me about their journey. Somehow if the story was that they just sat in the closet I don't think it would be of interest. Road hard and abused is another story. Get that rifle and give it some history.

Everything becomes "collectible" if you live long enough. Shoot it and enjoy it for its intended purpose.

+1 Shoot it and enjoy it. It is a rifle, built to shoot. Certain firearms should be in museums, some are too old and dangerous to fire, all otheres should, IMHO, be shot regularly.

    Good luck

I had the same issue with a safe queen that I've got. I really don't want to part with it, but I'll probably wind up doing it anyway.

Thinking that it "may" become a collectible item down the road is a good thought, but in all honesty, it may never happen. Shoot it and enjoy it, keep it in great condition, and if it becomes collectible, keep it or sell it in its great condition.

how old are you. If it takes 40 years to gain value chances are, you might be dead. Unless you want something to hand down. But My self I would rather enjoy things while I live. That doesnt mean you cant keep things nice and have value held. All of my guns that I have bought brand new still look like they are out of the box

Shoot it and care for it well.
I used to recruit for the NRA until they sold us down the river (again!) in Heller v. DC. See my auctions (if any) under username henryreilly
