WInchester M97 buttstock

I have inherited an old M97 that needs some work. One of the parts houses describes M97 buttplates as "with toe, and without toe."

Hmmmm.......is the toe the little part that hangs over the top of the butt and goes onto the comb, and is usually pointed, like an arrowhead?

What determines if I should go for a steel buttplate or a hard rubber one? Were steel ones special order, or the other way round?[?]

Thanks.

The parts house has an odd way of describing them, but essentially, you have it correct. Only the early Model "1897"s have the checkered steel butt plate with the widows peek. Hard rubber butt plates were special order items until circa 1910/1911. The determining factor for which type is correct, is the exact vintage of the gun. If you have a Model "97", it should have a hard rubber butt plate.
