scope for FAL

Anyone care to recommend a scope for my FAL?

Only other scope experience is Walmart stuff, fairly sure I don't want to head that way again. I do want to keep cost down some, I do want something that will stand up to being on a 308 semi, ideally I'd like something with a reticle I can illuminate, and I'd really like a low to medium power variable (1.something to 4-6x)

I just bought a DSA FAL carbine. I think choosing a scope for this type of rifle raises the question of appearance as well as function. I see some guys with the 6 to 24X scopes with a 50mm AO and aside from whether or not that's needed, I think it looks out of place on a military type rifle.

I have a Pentax (same guys that make the cameras I suppose) 1.5 to 5X with no forward bell. The scope seems OK, it has bullet compensation grid reticle also. I think this is in keeping with the guns function - at 1.5X it has a wide field of view - as well as appearance - and 5X is probably about all you need for max.

I think any of the Burris, Leupold, Nikon, etc of the same configuration would be fine.

For around 100 bucks you can pickup a Nikon ProStaff 4x32. I have a Prostaff and have been very pleased with it. Chose it over a second generation VX Leupold. It's probably comparable to the VX-III, for 1/3 the price.

What are you going to be shooting at?

The original SUIT sight makes for a nice "illuminated" scope.

Make sure if you buy one that it is for the FAL and not the M16

They have a different distance ramp/cam

You might want to try a red dot type sight. I have used both low powered scopes and red dots. I found out quick that most scopes get in the way of the carry handle that is on most FALs. I have used the dots with scope mounts that are cut for stripper clips which is also handy.

No carry handle, and I've thought about a dot. Only thing is, no one local really carries any, and hte one that I saw at a range (looong ago) was one of those "obscure the eye and let the dominant/passive eye trick thingie put an image of the dot on a target" - never worked for me. Also, I hunt pie plates and helium baloons with it, and I recently got access to shooting at up to 500 yards, so I think I'm going to need some magnification.

I have a 1.5x6 on mine and it has worked well for me for close and distance.

I am up to 14,000 rounds on a $45 BSA 3-9x40. I would not have expected this scope to last that long. Previous "cheap" scopes lasted typically 3-500 rounds. The worst was a cheap Tasco dot that lasted 3 rounds. FAL's can be very hard on scopes if the gas system isn't adjusted properly.

I haven't looked into scope mounts for the Fal for a long time. But, back then the selection of mounts was pretty bad. Most were a weaver rail atop a standard Fal cover and they were not in any way solid enough for accurate shooting. To the point that I never scoped my L1A1. So what I'm trying to point out is that an appropriate mount may well be a better topic then what scope.

    Good point.

DSA makes an excellent FAL dust cover scope mount. It uses 10 screws and steel plates with grooves that slide into the receiver and is rock solid once in place. I also have another brand (no name on it) that is similar in strength & is very thick & heavy. The DSA costs about $65.00

I think I'd stay away from the $14.95 type mounts.
