Ruger 10/22 jams

My 10/22 jams about every 3-5 rounds. I get a double feed and a stove pipe. my brothers 10/22 carbine has the same problem. we've tried 5 different mags. so i don't think thats the prob. both have been kept clean and lubed. the extracter isn't worn or damaged. if any of you are familiar with the innards, the "OPERATING ROD" or the rod the bolt sits on is about 1/2" shorter than the inside of the recever I don't know if it's supposed to be like that. Also i've heard that different ammo changes things and i've only tried Remington and Federal any suggestions on a good brand that might work. I've probably only put 300 round through it since I got it.
any suggestions would be very appreciated. thanks

So I have this 10/22 that I put a carbon fiber bull barrell on and had some trigger work done to but the rounds tend to jam almost every time when using the bannana clips and once per 10 using the stock clips. Any Ideas?

    Try a 40 grain bullet

Are you using the little box mags? Sometimes the spring is wound a little too tightly at the factory, and the rounds will squirt out after the first 2-3 rounds.
Easy fix; using a hex wrench of the appropriate size, unscrew the (unloaded) magazine's hold-it-all-together screw until the hex-shaped collar comes out of the body of the mag about 1/16", and adjust the spring tension by turning it one way or the other a turn or two at a time.
You might also check the hex screws that hold the barrel to the receiver, depending on the age of your guns. It may be that the barrel isn't quite snug against the receiver.

Hmmm. I've never had a jam in my 10/22, but the suggestion to adjust the tension in the clip sounds like a great one to me.

Those semis can be tricky, take it apart clean it real welll and make sure its put back together right. Still have problems, try different ammo and new magazines. Past that try a gun smith. My Marlin likes to jam after a while when it hasnt been cleaned. The action gets dirty and doest cycle as freely

Did you do any amatuer gunsmithing on it? I've shot and owned over a dozen 10-22s that were in all kinds of condition and I've rarely had a malfunction. Good luck!

My old (1976) 10/22 started stovepiping after literally thousands of rounds. Had to replace the ejector and it promptly stopped. As advised before, try different ammo, too. Mine likes CCI Minimag.

I assumed that you have pulled the barrel and receiver out of the stock popped the pins and dropped out all moving parts cleaned them well and lightly lubbed them and tried the gun again.

I did have a problem with lube backing up the chamber in the barrel and thus preventing the bullets from cycling properly. I did not realize that there was a buildup of crud in there and had to pull the barrel and scrub the heck out of it with the little corkscrew metal brushes. That did the trick, but it was a job to clean it all out. Use a barrel light to check your work.

Had it happen on one of my target pistols also. If the chamber is tight it can be a problem. Check that before you start replacing parts on a new rifle.

Try cci standard or mini mag. I have tried shooting remington in speed matches, and it failed miserably. The cci mini mags work flawlessly for me.
