steel shot in full choke shotgun

I tried to do a search on this first but i guess i couln't figure the right key words to use. I was given an 870 wingmaster it has a fixed full choke barrel. I know steel shot will damage the older barrels if they have a full choke but do the newer ones have the same problem with this? If there is a difference how do i tell a new one from and old one?

I've been told, and this was on a test for my position at Sportsmans Warehouse, that you should NOT shoot steel shot through a Full choke.

Improved Modified is the tightest I was told.

Albeit there are multiple dimensions for tubes and multiple styles, some are different than others.

On the other hand Poly(brand) Chokes can handle heavi-shot and any steel loads. Whether they can handle them when adjusted to FULL or more, I'm not sure.
Half of the lives they tell about me aren't true.

A couple of thoughts... if the Wingmaster was more or less a workhorse (beater) shotgun, you could just have a gunsmith cut off an inch or so such that the new choke constriction was modified or improved modified. If the gun is in really nice shape, you might want to consider having the barrel threaded for choke tubes. Carlson's thin wall choke tubes or true choke tubes would work on those older Remington barrels. Then, depending on which choke tubes you installed, you would be able to shoot lead or steel, and be ready for anything from quail, to rabbits, to geese. Most barrels can still be threaded for choke tubes for around $135-150, and that generally includes your choice of 3 choke tubes and a wrench.

Stupid me!! Calamity, here's an even BETTER and MORE COST EFFECTIVE SOLUTION!! Disregard my earlier post. I wasn't thinking properly after a long day at work. Just buy yourself a 12ga 870 Express barrel. It will fit your 12ga Wingmaster perfectly and will already be threaded for Remchoke tubes. The Express barrel just won't have the shiney blue finish. And keep it oiled. The dull black matte finish rusts really easily. And you can get a good used Express barrel for around $100 if you are patient.
    Good luck, sir. mak

    Don't cut the barrel,
Have a competent gunsmith put a reamer to it...
